Here Is What Former ‘Catwomen’ Think Of Zoe Kravitz’s Casting

by Kaylen Summers

It’s official! Zoe Kravitz will be putting on her ‘cat costume’ for Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman movie. The actress will be playing the coveted role of Selina Kyle against Robert Pattinson’s cape crusader this time.

Zoe Kravitz made her acting debut in the 2007 film No Reservations. However, her breakthrough role came from another superhero movie- X-Men: First Class (2011). The actress went on to give memorable performances in movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Now, Kravitz is all set to bring the popular comic-book character back onscreen, and she is getting a lot of support, especially from some of the other ladies who’ve previously played Catwoman on the big screen.

The character first made her appearance in comics as ‘The Cat’ in Batman #1 (1940). However, Catwoman was eventually transitioned into an anti-heroine rather than a supervillainess of Batman.

When the casting for the character began many actresses were rumored to play the role. It was only recently that Kravitz got officially confirmed to play the role and most fans were on board with the idea. Not just the fans, former Catwoman actresses Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, and Halle Berry are now also offering their support to Kravitz as well.

Michelle Pfeiffer welcomed Kravitz into the clowder while addressing about the casting in the Good Morning America. Pfeiffer who played Selina Kyle in the Tim Burton sequel Batman Returns, even had some “important” advice for the actress: “Make sure, whilst designing the costume, they consider how you’re gonna go to the bathroom.”

On the other hand, Halle Berry who took on the role for the standalone movie Catwoman, praised the casting choice on her Twitter, saying: “Special shout-out to your new Catwoman, the eternally graceful & extremely badass Zoe Kravitz. Keep shining Queen & welcome to the family!”

Anne Hathaway who had the most recent portrayal of the character made her opinion clear in a post on her Instagram account. “The biggest congrats to Zoë Kravitz on landing the role of a lifetime”, says Hathaway. “Well, one life anyway…⁣⁣ Enjoy the ride, Selina,”

The Batman is expected to hit theaters on June 25, 2021. With the casting progressing swiftly, it won’t be long since we see the movie head into production.

These LEAKED IMAGES From James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Looks Awesome

by Kaylen Summers

Even in its preproduction stage, James Gunn was not shy to show off inside-details and images for his upcoming DC film The Suicide Squad. Now, it looks like some leaked images from the movie set have surfaced online. The new images are giving us a pretty good look at how the heroes will be looking like in the upcoming movie. Though Gunn has been teasing us over the past months, this is the first clear look that we are getting at the new heroes (or villains, to be exact).

The leaked images show some members of the massive cast involved film, including Nathan Fillion, Flula Borg, Pete Davidson, Mayling Ng, and Sean Gunn. There is also Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang returning from the last installment and Sean Gunn is seen in a CGI suit. Rumors are suggesting that the actor will be playing Weasel, a costumed villain and enemy to DC’s Firestorm.

We still need to figure out who the rest of them are. But unfortunately, according to the director, many of these characters might not end up having a big role in the movie. In fact, according to Gunn, most of them will not even make it out alive by the end of the movie. But we are sure that in Gunn’s hands each of these characters will have unique and memorable.

However, if you are expecting the new installment to a continuation of the Will Smith starer, then you are wrong. Everything about the new Suicide Squad is brand-new and fans are really excited to see Gunn’s take on the characters. Afterall the guy does have a strong track record at Marvel, in making the blockbusters Guardian of the Galaxy and Guardian of the Galaxy. Vol.2. If the director is able to bring some of the emotional aspects from that franchise over to The Suicide Squad, it will surely be a blockbuster as well.

James Gunn is known for his works at Marvel. He landed on the DC project after being fired from Disney last year. Though he was rehired less than a year later, the director decided to finish off the DC project before going back to the third Guardians movie.

Let us know what you think about the leaked set photos. Here are some of them:

Joker’s Rank In IMDb’s ‘Top Movies of All Time’ List Will Shock You

by Kaylen Summers

Though there are mixed responses about the movie, Joker has no intention of stopping anytime soon. The movie has become a huge hit at the box office and slowly making its way up to become one of the biggest hits from DC in recent times. Now, it seems like more and more IMDb users are also cheering for the movie. The controversial movie has become one of the highest-rated movies of all time on the online movie database.

Making its way into the Top 10 movies of the list and occupying the No.10 slot, the movie stands tall among some of the cult classic titles like Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption, and the first two Godfather movies. With Heath Ledger’s clown prince of crime (The Dark Knight) currently ranked No. 4, it is safe to say that fans love watching the character on screen again and again (We are not talking about you, Jared Leto!).

Standing apart from the existing DC movie canon(s), the Todd Phillips directed movie presents an alternate origin story for the chaotic comic book villain. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as Arthur Fleck deserves a spotlight even in the midst of all the controversies. The movie also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, and Brett Cullen, alongside Phoenix.

The new Joker movie had been facing many controversies over its release in theaters. The film’s violent and disturbing content is being widely criticized to evoke mass shootings or copycat killings by people with the same mental state. While nothing of such has been reported thus far, the movie continues to take the heat even though it has made it’s way up to become the highest-grossing movie from WB studios this year. Whatever the case may be, there is no denying how well the movie is crafted in Phillips’ direction and the Phoenix’s performance.

Though it’s a wonderful sight to Phoenix’s performance being appreciated alongside Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, IMDb numbers can quickly change eventually over time, either during its theatrical run or after a subsequent release on home video.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, watch it and let us know what you think about it.

A Training Day Prequel is Officially Underway

by Emily Keen

Denzel Washington’s Training day is getting a prequel. Warner Bros. is currently working on the project. The original movie released in 2001 and was a box office hit with a gross collection of $104 million at the box office.

The movie follows the life of Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) who is taken up for evaluation by Alonzo Harris (Washington) for determining his potential for joining the LAPD. It does not take long for Jake to learn that Harris is corrupt and has quite a shady past.

The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua with a script from David Ayer. Denzel Washington won an Oscar for the second time in his career for his role as Alonzo Harris (The first one being for Supporting Actor in Glory). Ethan Hawke also received an Oscar nomination.

The movie was later on adapted into a tele series that premiered in 2017, starring Bill Paxton and Justin Cornwell. Unfortunately, the venture had to be called off after Paxton’s untimely death.

The prequel is rumored to be showcasing the past life events from Hariss’ life and is set almost a decade behind the time period of the original movie. Blacklist writer Nick Yarborough will be working on the script. The prequel as of yet has no attached director to it.

Denzel Washington’s character in the original movie was 46 years old. Now that the prequel is set almost a decade earlier, Alonzo would probably be in his late thirties. We wonder who could best fit to play the younger Alonzo. Bets are being placed on John David Washington (Denzel’s son) who is currently 35. If Warner Bros. believes that the apple does not fall very far from the tree, then chances of John being the young Alonzo seem pretty high. In addition, John has recently worked with Warner Bros. for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. So the predictions are not entirely delusional.

There is no hint of Antoine Fuqua or Jeffrey Silver(one of the three original producers) being involved in the making until yet. But there is a possibility they might return as executive producers.

A lot of projects lately tend to create a buzz but do not make it past the writing stage. We hope the Training Day prequel does not suffer the same fate. But considering the accomplishment of the original film, it would not be wrong to assume that Warner Bros. is pretty serious with this one.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Lands a Secret Role In Matrix 4

by Emily Keen

Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been officially signed for a lead role in Matrix 4. The makers are reportedly deep into a rigorous casting process and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II clearly passed the hard test.

It’s a test to enter The Matrix Universe after all. You need more than just acting skills!

Although the role landed by The Greatest Showman star has been kept under wraps. We are left with a hint about a young Morpheus appearing in the film. And now, looks like the two pieces of the puzzle fit right in.

As we know Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. Warner Bros. is also excited they were able to get Lana Wachowski back at the Director’s chair.

The present Warner Bros Studios boss Toby Emmerich said:  “We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana. Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker – and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

The concept of The Matrix was considered a benchmark in the history of Sci-fi cinema for many considered it way ahead of its time. Although Reloaded and Revolutions did drop the ball, this could be the franchise’s chance to redeem itself. And looks like the Wachowskis are hell-bent on making that happen

Lana is going ahead with the screenplay in full swing. She said she has been adapting pre-developed concepts for the plot along with sister Lilly Wachowski. The Lazarus Project author Aleksandar Hemon and writer David Mitchell are also lending the story their writing prowess.

Lana said in a statement – “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

The Matrix Universe genesis-ed almost 20 years ago revolutionizing the way sci-fi movies were perceived. The film begins production early 2020 and there is no confirmation of a release date for the feature. The plot of Matrix 4 has been creating waves amongst the fans with impending mysteries and rumors. We can only hope the follow up is worth all the commotion.

EXCLUSIVE! It Looks Like Batman and Joker Will Face-off At Oscars This Year.

by Kaylen Summers

There is no doubt the Todd Philips’ Joker will be a worthy contender at the Oscars this year. Grossing a weekend collection of $96 million at the domestic box office and $248 million worldwide, the movie is clearly triumphing at the theatres. Joaquin Phoenix’s power-packed portrayal of Arthur Fleck and his gradual descent into a homicidal maniac is nothing short of excellence.

However, it seems like the new Batman will be chasing down his arch-nemesis at the Oscars too. Recent reports are confirming that Robert Pattinson will be competing at the Oscars next year for his performance in ‘The Lighthouse‘. A24 has officially submitted the actor for award consideration.

Pattinson will be competing in the lead actor category while co-star Willem Dafoe’s name has been submitted for the supporting actor field. The Lighthouse made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and received immense critical acclaim. Though the movie is yet to be released in theaters, it has already established itself as one of 2019’s must-see movies.

The Lighthouse is director Robert Eggers’ homage to the classic black-and-white horror movies era. The movie takes place in the 1890s and talks about two lighthouse keepers (Pattinson and Dafoe). Their isolation and loneliness drive them into insanity.

With the movie already being referred to as a classic, all is now left to see is whether it will take the ‘clown prince of crime’ down. If given his first Oscar nomination, it will huge milestone in Pattinson’s career as he is all set to play ‘cape-crusader’ in the upcoming The Batman.

Joker, on the other hand, has already made its moves for Oscar, as the movie had a special show at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre on Saturday. However, the reactions for it were mixed. The movie was already receiving similar critical responses long before, which gave its 69% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score and a B+ on CinemaScore.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until the nominations are officially declared to see how far this battle will go. Check out Spotflik again for future updates about this.

Is There A Matrix Cinematic Universe In The Works?! Zak Penn Reveals

by Kaylen Summers

For movie fans around the globe, the recent announcement about the fourth Matrix movie came as a shocker. The sequel installment will see Lana Wachowski back in the franchise writing and directing the movie, and also Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles from the original trilogy.

Now, more news about the franchise is being revealed as Zak Penn confirmed that Warner Bros. is actively developing two Matrix projects.

It was about two years ago that Zak Penn let fans know that he was working on something new for the Matrix universe. Though fans were initially confused about whether it was a remake or a reboot, no one thought that it would be the further extension of the universe.

Here is Zak Penn’s Twitter clarification below.

“People keep asking, so let me clarify there are two different Matrix projects at WB. I wrote one set earlier in the timeline of the Matrix universe. Lana Wachowski is directing a sequel that I did not work on but can’t wait to see. Neither of them are reboots.”

Yes! It seems like we are finally going to get a ‘Matrix Cinematic Universe’.

Unfortunately, Zak Penn didn’t say much about his Matrix project than that it will be taking place earlier in the timeline. The writer has always been known for standing against Warner Bros. trying to reboot the franchise. Now, he finally gets his wish fulfilled as ‘The Matrix Universe’ is expanding further. As fans, we too share the same excitement.

While this news unfolds, we have been also getting more info on Lana Wachowski’s Matrix 4 movie as well. The movie will see most of its artists and technicians from the first installments return to keep everything uniform. In addition to that, last week the officials revealed that they are looking for an actor to portray the younger version of Keanu Reeves’ Neo. There are also rumors that we might see a young Morpheus too.

This is what Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich had to say about the movie: “We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana[…] We are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix.”

With Lana Wachowski putting the finishing touches on the script and casting already underway, we won’t have to wait long to see the movie, it seems. However, there are no details as to where Zak Penn’s Matrix project stands in the development phase.

Watch Out! Your Joker Social Media Posts Might Be Under FBI Monitoring.

by Kaylen Summers

DC movies may not always be blockbusters. But when they do, they will definitely do it with a bang (literally!).

As Todd Phillips’ Joker is all set to release this weekend, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into any potential threats at the screenings. Over the past few months, the movie had become the center of the debate for its violence implications. Many officials and critics are concerned that the movie could drive people with the same mind frame to carry out acts of violence, just like the fictional character onscreen.

Talking about the concern, the FBI had this to say in a statement: “While our standard practice is to not comment on specific intelligence products, the FBI is in touch with our law enforcement and private sector partners about the online posts. As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activity to law enforcement.”

Adding fuel to the fire, the FBI also revealed that they have found “disturbing and very specific chatter in the dark web” regarding the Joker screenings. The chatter apparently is a bunch of trolls trying to throw dirt on to the movie.

In addition to this, it seems like the Iowa National Guard is on the lookout for “potential active shooter threats” during the upcoming movie screenings. Unfortunately, the warnings appear to pretty serious as “credible sources indicate a known extremist group may be behind the threat.”

However, the Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips argue that the movie is not going to push anyone into acts of violence.

The government looking out for any suspicious behavior and ensuring the safety of moviegoers appreciatable. Even theaters have taken extra steps by beefing up their security prior to the screenings. Whatever happens, we will have to wait and see if the movie’s opening collection will get to be affected by all these warnings and increased security.

Suicide Squad Unites: New Photo Of Cast Includes Margot Robbie & Pete Davidson

by Kaylen Summers

New specifics about James Gunn’s Suicide Squad has arrived as the director himself revealed that his version of characters will be mostly based on the iconic 1980s comic run. Recently, Gunn shared a new photo of the cast with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 star Pom Klementieff. The stars of the upcoming film were at a screening of Joker.

With most of the cast set, The Suicide Squad seems to be pretty huge even for James Gunn. However, the production has already begun and in honor of that, the director also posted a picture of an original comic given to him by his agent. Answering to one of the questions by his fans, Gunn had this to say about the characters and their source material origins:

“The original Squad was a group of adventurers, soldiers, and scientists, who explored and battled anomalous events. Ostrander introduced the idea of the Dirty Dozen with disposable, second-rate supervillains. King Shark didn’t enter the team till the 2000s. (Our) movie takes elements from all those timelines but is especially indebted to Ostrander (and Kim Yale).”

Though Gunn seems okay answering fan questions on social media, it seems like he has brought some secret-keeping Marvel skills over to DC as well. However, keeping everything tightly under wraps will turn good for us too, since it should make the movie more satisfying as it releases in 2021.

Whatever the case may be, we are sure to get some set photos to come our way in the near future, either officially from Gunn and the studio, or as leaked set photos and videos.

New Footage Reveals Harley In Roller Derby Costume

by Kaylen Summers

DC’s Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is tuning up to be a flick worth waiting for. Though a full trailer for the next year’s movie is yet to arrive, the filmmakers have spared no time in teasing us with sneak-peaks here and there. From a short Comic-con footage to a theater-only teaser released alongside IT Chapter Two, the makers are not shy to show off their works whenever they can. The latest addition to this comes from a video from WarnerMedia’s (the parent company of Warner Bros. and DC) YouTube page.

The new footage gives us a glimpse of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn at a roller derby.

birds of prey roller

You can watch the full video below:

It may be the last place you will expect a new look for the movie, but we are so awestruck with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn that we’ll take whatever we can get. The short portion shows Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan working with actress Margot Robbie in full roller derby costume.

With her pigtails going through her helmet and a great roller derby outfit, the scene will surely have some of the fun and heart of Whip It combined with the ridiculousness of Rollerball.

Lately, Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead remarked that the film will be really weird when compared with other comic book movies. The first poster released supports this description to the most as well.

With the tone of the movie already made familiar with the audiences, Birds of Prey is expected to have fair reception when it arrives in theaters on February 7.

Sherlock Holmes 3: Dexter Fletcher Replaces Guy Richie As The Director

by Kaylen Summers

It’s been more than a decade now since we saw any new adventure from Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock. However, recent reports reveal that the distinguished detective of Baker Street will be returning back to the big screens soon.

After the first two movies of the franchise were released, Robert Downey Jr was busy with everyone’s favorite billionaire Tony Stark a.k.a Ironman. Now that the universe is safe from intergalactic threats, will see him back as the titular detective who solves perplex mysteries with his right-hand-man, Doctor Watson.

Jude Law will be returning to the franchise too in the role of Watson. However, Guy Ritchie- who helmed both 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s A Game of Shadows– will not be returning to the director’s chair for this one. The director had been busy lately, with his recent live-action Disney remake, Aladdin.

But, don’t worry. The threequel is still in safe hands as the Rocketman director, Dexter Fletcher will be taking over the franchise from him. The filmmaker had a very successful run with his Elton John biopic that did well both critically and commercially.

When asked about the movie and its style, during a recent interview, the filmmaker had this to say: “I think that’s inevitable, isn’t it? Whenever you have different filmmakers. I’m not gonna ignore what he did so brilliantly before. There will be an element of that, but I will also bring my own voice to it as well and it will be something sort of different. And I suppose that’s the idea of bringing in somebody new. We’ll see what happens.”

Flecher was on his press rounds promoting the home-video release of Rocketman.

Both the directors have known each other for a very long time. Flecher even stared in Ritchie’s breakout feature, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. When heard about him directing the threequel, Flecher revealed that his pal was apparently very supportive.

“He’s very generous about it,” he explained, “He’s like, ‘You’re going to have a great time with it. Go and have a great time.’ It’ll be exciting. Robert [Downey Jr.] is amazing. Jude [Law} is fantastic. There’s an incredible cast there and a great opportunity. He’s not around to do it. He’s off doing what he’s doing. So it feels good to be part of that. Guy and I go way back and he’s very generous. I think he sort of finds it rather fun that it’s me.”

All plot details about the movie are currently being kept under wraps. With Robert Downey Jr. star power, the movie could probably outdo the previous two flicks which made a combined $1.06 billion at the global box office.

The official word on when production will begin is yet to be disclosed. From what we know the movie will film in California and is scheduled for release in cinemas on December 21st, 2021.

‘The Suicide Squad’: James Gunn Casts Comedian Steve Agee as King Shark

by Kaylen Summers

From specifically-themed birthday cake to plenty of speculation and rumors, we all knew that it would be happening one way or the other. Our expectations were not in vain as it is now official that King Shark will be a part of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and comedian Steve Agee will be cast in the role. Agee will be providing the voice-over to the humanoid super-villain with shark’s torso and a human’s legs.

The DC villain created by Karl Kesel first made a brief cameo in the comics in Superboy vol. 3, #0 (Oct. 1994) and later made his first full appearance in Superboy vol. 3, #9 (Nov. 1994). Even though he was a part of the Arrowverse series The Flash, Gunn’s new movie will mark his first appearance in a big-screen adaptation.

Gunn and Agee have already worked together in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which he played the Ravager Gef. However, he is known among fans as a comedian with a knack for stealing scenes. The actor has popped up in everything from New Girl to Superstore to You’re the Worst. He has also voiced for Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and Netflix’s Twelve Forever. If that is not enough to note how incredibly talented he is, Agee has also written 306 episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

It was in 2016 that Warner Bros. and DC released the first installment of Suicide Squad, written and directed by David Ayer. Even though the movie went through pretty negative reviews, it became a box office hit earning up to $746.8 million worldwide.  The movie also suffered a bit of tumultuous post-production with Warner Bros. who were desperate on changing the heavily criticized dark tone of their movies.

The new movie will be a soft reboot with an original story from Gunn. Chuck Roven and Peter Safran will be overlooking the production. Though sequel will not be having direct ties to the first one, it will be picking up where the 2016 film had left off. Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) are reportedly reprising their roles from the first movie. Newly added members to the team will be Idris Elba as a yet-to-be-revealed character, David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), and Flula Borg in a supporting role.

The Suicide Squad is expected to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021, with its production starting in September. With Gunn onboard, The Suicide Squad will be shaping up to be one of the most anticipated superhero projects of recent times.

Check out this space for more updates about the movie.

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 Reshoots. DC Fans In Fear.

by Kaylen Summers

Reshoots are normal. But when you hear a DC movie is getting reshoots, it is inevitable to expect the worse. Warner Bros. have a pretty solid track record of ruining DC movies with their reshoots, and we have plenty of examples to prove it.

Now, the Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, is reportedly back in London for reshoots and fans seems seriously nervous about it.

Production on Gal Gadot Wonder Woman 1984 commenced in the summer of 2018 and wrapped in late December of the same year, and the fans were eagerly awaiting the sequel to the record-breaking first film. However, director Patty Jenkins pushed the movie to from a November 2019 release to June 2020. She wanted to have a June release same as the first movie which opened in June 2017.

With no other official details announced about the reshoot, fans are speculating many theories. Some are even believing that the reshoots are in order to incorporate a new Batman and Superman replacing that of Ben Affleck’s and Henry Cavill’s from the existing DCEU.

There is no doubt that the Wonder Woman movie is the only consistent movie from the  DCEU (Worlds of DC) so far. Though Aquaman and Shazam! were also box-office hits from the studio, the future of these movies is still unknown. In addition, the studio recently announced that it is changing strategies from focusing on a shared universe of stories to more standalone films tied to the directors’ vision. Considering that, a new soft reboot with Wonder Woman seems far fetched.

In any way, all questions will be answered with the release of Wonder Woman 1984- starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wigg, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.

Live-Action Akira Movie Has Been Delayed For ‘Thor 4’.

by Kaylen Summers

It looks like Marvel loves sidestepping Warner Bros. in every way possible.  First, it was with James Gunn. After being fired by Disney, the writer-director was hired by WB for doing a soft reboot of their Suicide Squad. Hearing the news, Marvel immediately hired Gunn back to his Guardians project(Though Gunn ensured fans that he will be going for Suicide Squad first). Now, Marvel is at it again and this time it is with Taika Waititi.

akira-spotflik2

Waititi and Warner Bros.’ live-action Akira movie has been put back on hold as the director is turning his attention to Thor 4 next. The project is based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1982 manga and 1988 anime feature of the same name. WB has spent more than a decade trying to get the project off ground. Many directors including Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) and Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) were involved with different earlier iterations of the project. However, all of them were eventually abandoned.

It was in September 2017 that Waititi got officially attached to direct Akira. But, the movie only received an official 2021 release date less than two months ago and was planning to go into production by the end of this year (or early 2020).  With the director now signing for Thor 4 over at Marvel Studios, Akira is going to have to wait.

thor-4--taika-waititi

According to new reports, Warner Bros. has officially announced the delay for Akira, citing script and budgetary concerns as the reason. The similar scenario occurred earlier in 2012 when Jaume Collet-Serra was assigned to direct the movie. Just days ahead of filming, the plug was pulled over budgetary issues.

On the other hand, it is unlikely for the studio to look for another director, considering that Waititi has come as close as anybody else to finally making the live-action Akira a reality. Besides that the studio has already invested too much into the project that waiting for two more years will not be a huge deal.

Thor 4 is expected to begin shooting within the next year and probably hit the theatres by 2021 or 2022. So, till then there won’t be much happening with Akira (if everything goes as expected).
