10 Movies About Serial Killers

by Kaylen Summers

The line between sanity and sycophancy is so thin, you never know when they may mingle! Serial killers have been a theme that filmmakers and viewers have always been obsessed with. Here are some of the best films based on serial killers for you to watch:

The Silence of The Lambs

The first character that comes to mind when you say the word serial killer is perhaps Dr. Hannibal Lecter. A cannibal who cooks and serves his preys to his guests, Hannibal is one of the most terrifying characters of all time. The silence of the Lambs follows a young officer who uses the help of an imprisoned Hannibal to understand the psychology of the killer she is currently trying to nab. Chilling and undeniably haunting, this is one of the best depictions of how a serial killer’s mind works.

The Clovehitch Killer

A film with all the classic elements of a serial killer movie, this is about a killer who was on a murder spree in the town. Years later, just when you think he is done, you realize maybe he is not. Exploring themes of social confirmation, human tendency to be violent, and the problems of suppression imposed by a dogmatic society, the film is a haunting take on violence and gore. Watch this film for an experience that will leave a very lasting impact on your mind.

The Hitcher

This is the story of a murderous, maniac hitchhiker who hunts down an unsuspecting couple. The film is visceral as it explores the philosophical motivations of a serial killer, trying to showcase the extent of madness the human mind is capable of. Terror is brought forth in the narrative through the mystery surrounding the killer’s motivations unveiling the sheer unpredictability of violence. Watch this film for an immersive take on how the mind of criminals works and what lies on the other side of sanity.

God Bless America

This film follows a troubled man with a problematic marriage who decides to go on a killing spree of the people he feels do not deserve to be alive. Though modeled on a serial killer storyline, the film explores the sheer rudeness human beings are capable of to each other in a society. The protagonist’s violence is not solely against his victims, but also against the society which stereotypes people and sets standards for everyone based on herd mentality.

Black Widow(1987)

This film takes the femme fatale concept to its most glorious heights by showcasing a female serial killer who is unstoppable and a police agent who is bent on bringing her before the law. The killer is one who marries rich old men and murders them for their money. While the two women piece together their games, we witness a racy, thrilling narrative unfold. The performances of the leading ladies are neck to neck and the film is full of intrigue, mystery, and all the substantial elements of a cat and mouse serial killer movie.

Deranged: Confessions of a Necrophile

A middle-aged man goes on a murder spree after the death of his mother. He was raised by his mother to be strictly religious and staunchly misogynistic. The film follows his motivations behind his act of violence. Though the title has the word necrophilia, the protagonist does not exhibit any such characteristics in the film. The plot is very mysterious and delves deep into the psyche of gender-based violence and what it is to be a man who thinks women are his to violate or mutilate because he belongs to a privileged gender.

Frenzy

One of Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpieces, this is a film about a serial killer in London and the ex-Air Force serviceman he implicates. Hitchcock is known for his storytelling patterns that induce curiosity, terror, and surprises. The same follows in this film with absolutely haunting music and performances that seem very real. The plot is full of interesting anecdotes on real murder mysteries in London and if you are a serial killer geek, there is plenty in here for you to go back and read!

Zodiac

One of director David Fincher’s best, this is the story of the hunt for a deadly serial killer who terrorized the U.S with his letters and bloodstained clothing that he sent to the police force after his murders. The movie explores the efforts of the officers to nab a criminal whose identity is unknown and hence the possibility that he could be anyone is something that makes the entire process very complex. Fincher has a penchant for crime thrillers and this is a classic example of how invested he is in the madness of the human mind.

Monster

Another story with a female serial killer in the lead, this film follows a woman who was an ex-prostitute who murdered seven of her male clients. Widely acclaimed by critics and film lovers alike, the film is a complex depiction of how female rage is rooted in gendered aspects of society. It features a protagonist so fierce yet fragile that it is hard to understand what she might do next. If you like seeing complicated female characters come alive in all their vulnerable, mad glory, this film is definitely for you.

I Saw the Devil

This is a South Korean thriller film about an agent who sets out to trace a serial killer after he murders his fiancé. The plot is deep and haunting as it explores the themes of obsession, chase, and gratification in the act of plotting and executing a murder. The protagonist has trysts with the killer now and then and is attacked and left free by the killer for him to feel powerful in the chase. A storyline that depicts the manic compulsions of a hardened criminal, this is a film that will stay in your mind for quite a while.

10 Bad Movies That Made 2020 Worse.

by Kaylen Summers

2020 was a year when the world needed all the good art that can possibly be out there. But there were some really bad films that made the year even worse. Here is a list of some of the worst films of 2020 based on viewer reviews:

Reality Queen

This is the story of an heiress who is struggling to gain back her fame after being ousted from the limelight by three sisters who resemble the Kardashian siblings. The film is among one of the worst-rated releases of 2020. Viewers claim it to be loosely written, flimsy, and packed with below-average performances that are totally not worth your time.

The Last Days of American Crime

Set against a heist plan by two men and a woman, this is a film that drags on without any real purpose insight. The film tries to bite off more than it can chew and falls flat on its face. The plot has the possibility to be a great action thriller but it is foiled by a lousy screenplay that makes it pointless to watch. Viewers have given the film less than 2 stars on average and it looks like a waste of energy to us.

Buddy Games

It is 2021 already and toxic masculinity has not ceased to take center stage in films! This is a classic boys trip film where a group of buddies reunites to have fun and end up resolving their issues and life crisis. The film is not bad in execution or performance, but it is the content and tone that make it extremely unacceptable in many moments. In this day and age, frat clubs of boys where anti-female humor is encouraged and celebrated cannot be applauded because it is high time we call such content out.

The Tax Collector

This is an action thriller about a local crime lord’s tax collector. He finds himself and his family in danger when a long lost enemy of his boss turns up. The film has all the elements that would make a really amazing thriller. But the plot gets haphazard in its execution and there is nothing much to look forward to. Despite the setting and the dedicated performances of the actors, the film fails to keep the interest of the viewer intact.

Survive The Night

This is a thriller in which a trauma surgeon is forced to operate on a wounded gunman who holds him and his family hostage. It is the story of crime, family problems, and professional ego. But the execution makes it one of the most disengaging films to watch. The screenplay is too loose for a film of this genre. The thrills are very predictable and there is not intrigue to the story after a few minutes into it.

Shortcut

A film about five teenagers who get terrorized by a mysterious creature, this is a film that attempts to chronicle the adventures and horror that follow their journey. But we all know that the most crucial element of a good horror thriller is intrigue. It is also what the film fails to get right. Predictable plot points dampen the experience and make it extremely hard to hold attention to the film. There is nothing more uninteresting than to watch a horror film that does not captivate the focus of the viewer.

Songbird

Set against the futuristic scenario where the Covid virus mutates into a deadly strain, this is a film that follows a woman in quarantine and attempts to save her before the virus gets the better of her. It is a tricky plot because we already have our information on the virus intact and to make us feel invested without creating any kind of logical pitfalls is a difficult task that the film fails to execute. It has all the elements of a good medical thriller but the writing falls short of creating curiosity and holding the storyline together.

Endless

Endless is a story of two high school sweethearts who are madly in love. They are separated by a tragic car accident leaving them devastated. The film starts off as a sweet romance but fails to deliver and keep up with the initial expectations it sets. It is a disappointment to watch the film after being set to a good start. The romance fizzles out and later on, it feels as though the story drags on, without any specific purpose.

After We Collided

Sequel to the 2016 film After, this is a film that fails to rise up to the expectations of the original. The storyline is haphazard and takes its own course after a point. The performances also are quite weak, making the experience uninteresting. The film is packed with very cliché young adult tropes. Young love has to be depicted very carefully or it will become laughable. What happens with this film as well. The screenplay could have been worked better and made more engaging.

Artemis Fowl

This is the story of a 12-year-old boy who attempts to find his missing father. He comes across a world of fairies and soon gets entangled in a difficult battle with them. The film loses its essence in world-building. The most important thing about fantasizes is to build a world convincingly. This film falters in that department. The premise is not very convincing owing to the problems in the execution. A beautiful story with immense potential for fantabulous output is foiled by writing that does not hold either attention or interest.

‘Stagecoach’ is on Amazon Prime. But is worth watching?!

by Kaylen Summers

American Cinema and its development owe a lot to the Westerns. Ultra stylized gun fights, morally muddy protagonist and lots of bloody violence- nothing is more nothing more wholesome, subversive, and iconic than a good western movie. However, for movie-history enthusiasts, the equation will not be complete without directors like John Ford and actors like John Wayne. Pioneers in their own ways, these people gave us some of the most memorable Westerns of all time- with Stagecoach still occupying a powerful and significant position in film history. But what makes this cult classic worth seeing after all these years?!. Let’s have some whiskey shots and find out.

Academy Awards

Released in the same year as Gone with the WindThe Wizard of OzMr. Smith Goes to WashingtonWuthering Heights, and Of Mice and Men, Stagecoach still managed to score seven Oscar nominations among the heavy competition. It got nominated for best picture, director, editing, art direction, and cinematography. It even bagged the prize for supporting actor (Thomas Mitchell) and music direction.

First Modern Western

Though Westerns were exceedingly popular in the early days of cinema, by the 1930s it fell out of favor. Nobody took them seriously and they ended up us low-budget B-movies. However, John Ford revived the lost status of the genre with Stagecoach. The movie brought realism and new storytelling methods to the genre and was a huge hit. For that, it is considered the first “modern” Western.

Influenced Later Movies

Stagecoach not only revitalized the Western but also became one of the most iconic and influencing movies of all time- for not just Westerns, but other genres as well. An example of this is the one scene in which the stuntman, Yakima Canutt, drops from a horse onto the ground and is dragged under the stagecoach. This scene can be seen imitated in later movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Maverick.

An Ensemble Film

Breaking away from the conventional Western movie plot, Stagecoach is an ensemble movie. It has a storyline with clear-cut main characters. The structure movie is much similar to the modern disaster movie. If you replace the threat of an alien invasion or a massive earthquake with the threat of an Indian attack, then you will get the formula for an ensemble movie like Stagecoach.

Officially Got Remade Twice

There are not many movies that get a remake. However, Stagecoach got officially remade twice. In 1966, a version of the movie was made with Ann-Margret as the prostitute, Red Buttons as the booze salesman, Bing Crosby as the doctor, and Alex Cord as Ringo. Later in 1986, a made-for-TV version was released with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings.

Is Willy Wonka Really A Harry Potter Wizard?! Here Are Some Proofs

by Kaylen Summers

There is a popular theory going on among internet users that the King of Chocolate, Willy Wonka is a wizard from the Harry Potter universe. Not just any wizard. Fans are suggesting that it is George Weasley who has grown up to become Wonka himself.

The idea of these two magical universes converging itself is enough for our hearts to swoon. But is there really any evidence to back this over-the-top theory? We decided to do a little bit of our own investigation to find out.

It is obvious for any fan of both to notice similarities in the various stories from two iconic universes. So, we can assume that the story of Weasly taking up the mantle of Willy Wonka happened in the years after his twin brother Fred died at the Battle of Hogwarts.

After considering his luck with ‘Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes’, George might have decided to take his talent elsewhere. Even before ‘Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes’ was known for selling magical variations of joke candies, prank products, and other objects. So it not that far for him to focus more on candy making than what he used to do with his brother.

Afterall their early products, ‘Puking Pastille’ seems to be a perfect fit for Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory alongside Violet Beauregarde’s bubble gum or Mike Teavee’s chocolate television. The possibility that these candies were made by the same person at a different time in his life is very much there.

Another notable coincidence is how Willy is a bit of a recluse, extremely secretive, and relentlessly offbeat in social deliveries. Since he is using magic for making candies, this awkward behavior is just him trying to keep the Wizarding world a secret from others.

Perhaps the most noticeable connection between the two universes is from the Oompa Loompas. Though they are fabricated folklore-like backstory, we all know that they are actually house-elves (We refuse to think differently!). Even though these elves love to serve their master, we may assume that they are given a generous compensation considering George’s sister-in-law Hermione Granger was known at Hogwarts to advocate for the welfare of house-elves.

Let’s not forget also the many possible attributes the two characters share: red hair, silly clashing outfits including a top hat, an undeniable talent for underhanded yet quipping insults, and even hearing loss.

What do you think?! Are both these characters the same?! Let us know in the comments below.
