8 Movies On Hulu That Will Surely Make You Fall In Love

by Kaylen Summers

Whether it’s break-up or patch up, we all love watching a good romance unfold on our screen. But, finding these feel-good rom-coms can be a miserable task at times. (Admit it! We all have been there.)

However, if you are on Hulu, then there is an extensive collection of romantic flick that can easily connect with your soft side. From classics to little-known favorites, here is a list of the best movie love stories that you can find on Hulu. The next time you’re craving for a rom-com, you can simply pick one from the list or binge-watch them all.

Pretty in Pink (1986)

When it comes to rom-coms, Pretty in Pink is iconic like every other John Hughes movie in the genre. Molly Ringwald plays the role of Andie Walsh, a young teenage girl who is in love with the rich boy Blane. Redefining the concept of teenage lovesickness on film, the core construct of this flick resonates with young audiences even today. If you are looking for some burning teenage love, then Pretty in Pink will be the right one to start from.

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Don’t mistake it with the recent miniseries on Hulu. We are definitely talking about the classic one. This romantic comedy is so good that you’ll be amazed to know that it is directed by the same person who helmed the Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire movie. Starring Hugh Grant, Four Weddings and a Funeral  tells the story of Charlie, who is uncomfortably busy with four weddings and a funeral. However, among the weirdly big circle of friends present at each event, Charlie keeps on encountering the beautiful American Carrie, played by Andie McDoweel.

Chasing Amy (1997)

Yes, you heard it right. Back in the ’90s, this movie was nicknamed as the “Ben Affleck falls in love with a lesbian” movie. Though the plot is pretty much that, Chasing Amy is more about love than just sexual politics. It explores the male insecurity in finding love and maintaining it and other human emotions. The movie is a wonderfully crafted rom-com with a bittersweet ending.

Sixteen Candles (1984)

John Hughes is back again on the list with the teenage masterpiece Sixteen Candles. More than just a romance, this iconic movie is a coming-of-age comedy flick. However, its core is pure and its ending truly romantic. The movie follows 16-year-old Sam Baker (Molly Ringwald) on her birthday. Her parents have completely forgotten about their daughter’s birthday and her crush, Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) doesn’t even know she exists.

Let the Right One In (2008)

This one will surely not be your first choice for a romantic movie on Hulu. However, there is something about Let the Right One In that makes it romantic and sweet from all the other movies. Yes, the flick is about a little boy and a little girl vampire and it’s a little spooky at times. But, no one will ever deny how sweet it is for this movie to present the beloved as the ultimate protector for her lover.

Secretary (2002)

Are all romances about puppy dogs and flowers? This movie says otherwise. From the sexual complexities of dominance and submission to some good old fashioned BDSM, this movie will make you rethink about the generic love stories. Starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, the movie is about Lee Holloway who takes a job as a secretary for E. Edward Grey (James Spader). The two soon embark on an unusual romantic relationship…

Oh, wait! Does the plot sound familiar to you? It is because this movie is everything 50 Shades of Grey tried to be- even down to the protagonist with ‘Grey’ as the second name.

Sense and Sensibility (1993)

Adapted from the Jane Austen novel of the same name, the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility is filled with talent both on camera and behind. Directed by Oscar-winner Ang Lee, the movie is surprisingly scripted by Emma Thompson. (The same actress who starred in Love Actually and Nanny McPhee.)

XX/XY (2002)

That’s a pretty awesome title, right?!  XX/XY refers to the two chromosomal pairings that make up women and men respectively. The movie, on the other hand, has nothing to do with genetics. It is about two women and one man who are entangled up together in a turmoil of emotions. Two college roommates, Sam (Maya Stange) and Thea (Kathleen Robertson) have a wild sexual encounter with animator Coles (Mark Ruffalo). Going through their relationship, the movie explores how one treats passion differently in young adulthood and adulthood.

Crazy Rich Asians 2: Writer Leaves After Pay Disparity Dispute

by Kaylen Summers

One more example is here to prove that Hollywood is still a hostile place for women- especially if you are of color. Recently, Crazy Rich Asians co-screenwriter Adele Lim found out that her fellow co-writer, Peter Chiarelli, a white man was earning 9 to 10 times more than her.

Adele Lim is a veteran TV writer who debuted into feature films with Crazy Rich Asians. The rom-com turned out to be a massive hit grossing $238 million globally and Lim has since signed a deal with Disney Animation and is working on Raya and the Last Dragon.

With such a huge success in the bag, it obvious that Warner Bros, would be more than willing to work on a sequel to the movie. Thus the work for Crazy Rich Asians 2 began and the writers of the first installment were back to pen it. However, it turned out that Peter Chiarelli, a more seasoned screenwriter, was offered between $800,000 and $1,000,000, while Lim was offered only around $110,000 for her work on the sequel.

Though the studio felt it to be a fair, industry-standard rate based on experience, Lim believes that her pay should be much closer to her co-writer.

Here’s what Lim had to say: “Pete has been nothing but incredibly gracious, but what I make shouldn’t be dependent on the generosity of the white-guy writer. If I couldn’t get pay equity after CRA, I can’t imagine what it would be like for anyone else, given that the standard for how much you’re worth is having established quotes from previous movies, which women of color would never have been [hired for]. There’s no realistic way to achieve true equity that way.”

The messy pay dispute has put Warner Bros. in a significant snag with Crazy Rich Asians 2. With Adele Lim no longer involved with the sequel, the studio will have a hard time finding the perfect substitute to bring back the magic. However, it seems like that alone cannot save this planned trilogy from production hell, as there are some scheduling issues with the in-demand cast. Hope it gets fixed once the scripting gets all sorted out.

Crazy Rich Asians is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan. The novel follows a young Asian American woman who meets her boyfriend’s parents, who are one of the richest families in Singapore. The lead is played by Constance Wu with Henry Golding as her fiancé. Michelle Yeoh plays the role of her future mother-in-law.

The upcoming sequels will be based on the next two books in Kwan’s trilogy — 2015’s “China Rich Girlfriend” and 2017’s “Rich People Problems.” With so many issues surrounding the project, the studio has not set any release dates for the sequels.

Long Live Rom-Com! Top 5 romantic comedies of 2019 (So Far)

by Kaylen Summers

Hollywood production houses are focusing more on building cinematic universes and as a result, genres like romantic comedies are facing extinction. With critics keeping a close eye on women representation in these movies, it’s no wonder why these studios don’t want to get their hands dirty. However, 2019 did produce a good share of carefully crafted rom-coms thanks to the enormous success of Crazy Rich Asians. Here are the top 5 of those rom-coms that are worth watching.

5. THE PERFECT DATE

This original teen rom-com from Netflix has Noah Centineo playing the role of a high-schooler who decides to raise money for college by posing as a stand-in boyfriend for girls in need. The film is based on the novel ‘The Stand-In’ by Steve Bloom and is directed by Chris Nelson. For those of who adored Centineo for his role in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, this is your chance to see him in his romantic lead performance. Other important cast members of the movie include Laura Marano, Camila Mendes, Odiseas Georgiadis, and Matt Walsh.

4. THE HUSTLE

A gender-flipped remake of the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which is itself a remake of the 1964 film Bedtime Story), The Hustle is directed by Chris Addison with Anne Hathaway and  Rebel Wilson in the lead role. The film follows two rival con artists trying to drive each other out of town. Initially titled as “Nasty Women”, the makers of the movie decided to go with a more ‘critics-friendly’ title instead. Whatever the case may be, this mystery-shrouded rom-com is sure to tickle your funny bones.

3. ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE

Rom-coms of 2019 are working hard to break away from its classic mould of cliches and they are really serious about it. While What Men Want saw the perfect black representation in the genre so far,  Always Be My Maybe tells the romantic story of an Asian couple. From director Nahnatchka Khan, the movie tells the story about two childhood sweethearts whose vastly different socioeconomic situations drive them apart as adults, even as they simultaneously find themselves falling in love. If that’s not a reason for you to watch this rom-com,  then here is one for you: Keanu Reeves is in it too!

2. WHAT MEN WANTS

Directed by Adam Shankman, What Men Want is an American romantic comedy film starring  Taraji P. Henson, Aldis Hodge, Richard Roundtree, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Tracy Morgan. Shankman is famous for his rom-coms including A Walk to Remember. A gender-swapped remake of the 2000 film What Women Wants, the plot follows a woman who, after drinking a potent concoction given by a shaman, gains the ability to hear men’s inner thoughts.

1. ISN’T IT ROMANTIC

Isn’t It Romantic is not just your normal rom-com flick. Its all the romantic comedies combined. The movie is an American satirical rom-com film directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson with Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine, and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles. Rebel Wilson plays a cynical Australian architect living in NYC, who gets knocked out during a mugging and wakes up in a parallel universe where everything plays out like it would in a PG-13 rom-com.
