Disney’s Live-Action Little Mermaid Movie: Melissa McCarthy Might Play Ursula

by Kaylen Summers

Disney is currently on a winning streak with the live-action remakes of their classic animated fairy tales. The 2019 movies Aladdin and Lion King are the latest addition to this. The studio is not willing to take a break from success as it is currently working on retelling The Little Mermaid.

Reportedly, Melissa McCarthy is in talks to take up the role of Ursula in the live-action remake of this iconic 1989 animated film. The final word on the deal is not out yet, but as fans of this golden age Disney tale, we believe that McCarthy will be the perfect one to play Ursula.

The need for live-action versions of Disney’s classics began with the success of 2017’s Jungle Book directed by Jon Favreau. Even though Tim Burton’s recent reimagining of Dumbo didn’t do well at the box office, the live-action redo of Aladdin scored huge at about $819 million dollars globally. With the most anticipated The Lion King, expected to become the next billion-dollar feather in Disney’s live-action cap, no wonder the studio is already looking for stars for their next flick.

The live-action Little Mermaid has been in development from 2016, with a script penned by Jane Goldman. The writer is famous for his works in movies like Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service. Rob Marshall, who directed the Best Picture Oscar-winner Chicago, has been announced as the director of the movie. Fans will have no hard time recognizing him for his other box-office hits including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and last year’s Mary Poppins Returns. With Mccarty on board, the movie is shaping up to be another blockbuster from Disney.

The original hand-drawn classic was based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. However, with the live-action version, there will be some tweaks here and there, considering how they sneaked in ideas of feminism into Jasmine’s character arc in Aladdin. Whatever the case may be, we really hope that they include the classic movie’s original tunes by Alan Menken. If all goes well, we might see McCarthy singing one of the iconic villainous songs in the Disney canon: “Poor Unfortunate Souls”.

The actress, however, has not yet disclosed anything regarding the movie. Being named by ‘Time’ as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2016, McCarthy is known for her roles in adult comedies like Bridesmaids, Identity Thief, and Life of the Party. She has received two Primetime Emmy Awards and nominations for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.

With the casting of McCarthy, the feature will officially take its first step into production. However, no timeframe has been announced yet regarding the release of the movie- while fans are expecting a 2021 release.
