After a long wait, we finally got our first look at the action-packed series of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The events of the series are set to continue the Avengers: Endgame storyline, in which Steve Rogers passed his iconic shield down to Sam. With the original Captain America gone, Bucky and Sam are out on there on adventures and trying to find their own place in the world without their friend.
Marvel has a reputation for laying the groundwork for major plot reveals well ahead in time. We witnessed the weird alien race called Skrulls in Captain Marvel. And the Marvel fans can’t help but wonder if they have seen these creatures apart from this film.
The shape-shifting creatures may have sparked a theory that questions the truth about a significant Marvel hero. Thor may not be who you think is after all. This has been an exciting reveal yet has some fans worried over the claims.
Marvel has used this strategy of dropping hints in many movies. Be it showing Wakanda on Nick Fury’s map in Iron Man 2 or the name-checking of Steven Strange in Winter Soldier. This creates a whole new kind of excitement amongst fans and Marvel is all game for it.
The theory suspects that the Skrulls have some odd connection with the characters we already know. Secret Invasion Storyline is a very important narrative in the MCU. In this story, the homeland of Skrulls is sabotaged by Galactus, and the survivors find their way onto the Earth and infiltrate the superhero community. They do this as a part of their scheme to eliminate the heroes permanently. This culminates in an epic battle where all superheroes have intruders among them. In the end, Norman Osborn is known to have saved the planet.
The Secret Invasion Storyline was rather intriguing in a notable way. That was until the Skrull infiltrators were activated by their masters, they thought of themselves as true Avengers. Meanwhile, the real heroes are kept in a temporary cessation of vital body functions to keep them dormant. They do not possess any memory of their kidnapping whatsoever.
So it is highly likely, the original lord of thunder was abducted and replaced by a Skrull.
According to Reddit user J-Patrick, Thor Ragnarok gives some kind of hint that the Odinson has been abducted by the Skrulls and replaced with one of their own. There are multiple instances in the film when Thor seems to have drifted away from his reality with some vague memories.
The theory suggests that he was taken captive before one of these incidents. After several months of his powers and memories being transferred into the body of a Skrull, he was frozen and the imposter Thor assumed his place.
Since Skrulls are natural shapeshifters they can also replicate a memory or a superpower just as easily. So it becomes almost impossible to tell them from the real superheroes. Thor lacks his Mjolnir in Ragnarok and Infinity War. Besides he starts exhibiting some new powers in addition. This seems suspiciously Skrull like. So is this nerve-wracking theory really true? Only time will tell.
The man behind the genesis of the Marvel universe is no longer amongst us. But for as long as he lived, he made it a point to watch over the superheroes he so dearly created. Stan Lee makes appeared in every Marvel Film until he died before the release of End Game. Be it for a few seconds, he is always there to fill his superhero with some pearls of wisdom.
A bevy of Marvel Superheroes including Hulk, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Black Panther are attributed to Stan Lee’s imagination.
Stan Lee’s appearance holds the same significance in the Marvel universe as A113 in Pixar movies.
While some perceive this just like a cameo he bags as a token of gratitude for giving us these superheroes, some fans have a different outlook about why he is there in almost every Marvel movie. The theory suggests that Stan Lee is a Watcher.
For those of you who are unaware, Watchers are alien beings who are handed with the responsibility of keeping a watch over the multiverse.
Over the years, almost every Marvel movie has dropped hints suggesting that there is a possibility that all our superheroes exist in a multiverse. Let us break it down for you.
Take for instance spiderman. It is obvious that Spiderman looks different in each multiverse. In one universe it is Toby Maguire, in the other he is Andrew Garfield while in the third he looks like Tom Holland. Even the animated venture based on Spiderman comics (Spiderman Into the Spiderverse) was set in a multiverse.
This proves that these parallel universes are a big part of Marvel’s narrative. If this is true, how does Stan Lee manage to appear in every universe? He has a cameo in all Spiderman movies with three different actors portraying the lead. Well that confirms that the watcher theory holds some weight to it.
Stan Lee’s cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2 is somewhat a hint that backs these claims. In James Gunn, directed film, Stan Lee is seen having a conversation with three other watchers sharing with them his experience as a federal expressman. This is him referring to his cameo of a FedEx postman in Captain America: Civil War.
Before this bit appeared in GOTG vol 2, fans believed Stan Lee is Uatu, the watcher. But this hypothesis is contradicted by the MCU wiki page which presents Lee as a “Watcher Informant”. An informant is tasked with passing information to the Watchers. So apparently Lee’s job is only to report to other watchers about his experiences on Earth.
In all probability Gunn himself believes this is true. In almost all movies Stan Lee portrays the same character which is a Watcher Informant.
But here is a twist which somehow puts a kink in the theory. Stan Lee appears in the post-credit scene of Big hero 6. He plays Fred’s dad in the film. Now, Big Hero 6 is a Disney/Marvel movie. The question remains if Big Hero 6 belongs to the Marvel multiverse of Disney multiverse. Since it is animated, it is highly unlikely to be called a part of the Marvel live-action universe. Probably a Marvel animated universe would be a better fit for the film.
Besides we cannot tell for sure if Fred’s dad is a watcher? And considering Big Hero 6 is an animated Disney film based on a Marvel character if Marvel multiverse standards apply to the film is pretty much ambiguous.
For all, we know Stan Lee is still awake in another version of this universe and smiling at this little concoction. How far do you think this theory makes sense? Feel free to add to this theory if you think we passed up on something. Comment below and let us know what you think.
Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ Movie Will Include Multiple Widows
by Kaylen Summers
Scarlett Johansson will be reprising her iconic role as Black Widow in her upcoming highly anticipated solo flick. Set as the first movie to kickstart Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movie will be a prequel taking place after the events of Captain America: Civil War. However, it seems like there is a lot more to look forward to in the movie than just that.
Recently, Rachel Weisz accidentally revealed that there will be multiple Black Widow operatives introduced in the movie. “There are quite a number,” said Weisz told IGN, “I’m a Black Widow and there’s Scarlett and Florence. There’s quite a bit of other characters you’ll also meet that are Black Widows.”
The news is exciting since the makers were quite silent in the past about any details of the movie. From what we know now, it is okay to assume that the Black Widow code name will actually be shared by some of the new cast members as well. However, this is not something new.
In the comics, the Black Widow Ops Program was one of the Department X’s espionage training programs. It plays a critical role in Natalia Romanova’s (Natasha Romanoff) life. Based at the Red Room facility, it had been a Cold War program to train the deadliest female spy in the world. It was created due to the success of their previous sleeper agent and assassin the Winter Soldier. It is obvious that the movie will be pitching on this idea, with multiple female spies trained under the program.
Black Widow will debut on May 1st, 2020. In the meantime, we hope that more details about the movie will be revealed. Stay tuned to get updated.
The New Mutants is the upcoming horror-superhero film from Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox. The movie will be the last of the X-men movies from 20th Century Fox, now that Disney has acquired the studio and its properties. However, it is said that the movie will not have any connections with the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be a standalone movie about a group of young mutants who are held in a secret facility for experimentation.
There is no doubt that the decade saw the progressive evolution of superhero movies as a genre. With more great actors putting on the superhero persona and more brilliant directors working on these movies, there is no time to watch these marvels (no pun intended!) than now.
From a decade filled with so many awesome superheroes, we have picked up 7 movies that are sure to entertain you and make you crave for more.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Any list about the genre will not be complete without mentioning Nolan’s Batman Trilogy. Since, we need to include more movies, we are mentioning only the best one from the three (though all three are brilliant). In the Dark Knight, Batman is up against his nemesis Bane- a rising terrorist mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham by unleashing a reign of chaos.
Deadpool made comic-book movies stretch even further with its R-rated cockiness. The movie is about the origin of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson. After being subjected to a rogue experiment, he is left with accelerated healing powers. With his newly gained superpowers, he adopts the alter ego Deadpool to find and kill the man who destroyed his life.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
This is where it all began. Ironman was not that popular when compared to other superheroes like Batman and Spiderman. But, this movie turned everything upside down and made him into a pop culture icon. It also set in motion one of the biggest and most popular cinematic franchises available today.
The Avengers (2012)
Ironman was only the starting point. The great ambition was to bring together a number of superheroes from different movies into a huge crossover movie. And the world saw it happen with The Avengers. It is Nick Fury, director of the S.H.I.E.L.D., who finds the need of a team to help save the world from a huge disaster. Thus began the Avenger initiative.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
What started with The Avengers finally came to an end a decade later with Endgame. The movie picks up after the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos has accomplished his plans and half of the universe is now gone. Now, what is remaining of the Avengers must assemble once more to somehow undo Thanos’ actions and make the universe return to its original state.
We all know how DC’s attempts to build a coherent universe has gone through the ages. However, we can proudly say that movies like Aquaman and Wonderwoman are surely the best from DC to date. Aquaman tells the story about Atlantis, an underwater kingdom that once was home to the most advanced civilization on Earth. Now, it is ruled by the power-hungry King Orm with an enormous army at his disposal. As the mad king is planning to conquer the remaining oceanic people and then the surface world, it is up to Arthur Curry aka Aquaman to stop him and take his rights to the throne.
Black Panther (2018)
There is a huge criticism that Marvel movies lack strong content. But, Black Panther perhaps a strong narrative and subtle messages than any other Marvel movie. King T’Challa is ruler of the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda. As he is chosen to become the new leader of the nation. However, he is challenged for the throne by an old unexpected member of his own family. Now, he must stop him to prevent Wakanda from starting a world war.
Black Widow marks the first solo-outing of the character after a decade of being in the Cinematic Universe. The movie will also kick start Phase 4 of MCU. Set as a prequel to the events of Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the movie is expected to be placed after Captain America: Civil War in the MCU timeline.
When Will Be The Next Endgame Level MCU Team-Up?! Here Is Your Answer
by Kaylen Summers
Avengers Endgame was a pretty huge conclusion to the 10-year-long saga of Marvel movies. The blockbuster is currently the highest-grossing film of all time and has no intention of leaving the crown behind anytime soon. But if you are expecting another mega movie event from MCU anytime soon, you are mistaken.
It seems like we have to wait another 10 years for such a movie event to happen again. Recently, Marvel Studios executive producer Trinh Tran explained about the time duration for seeing something like Avengers: Endgame again.
There is no doubt that the Infinity Saga wrapped up, with fans stunned and craving for more. With the pressure of the huge success over their head, recreating such an event again in a fresh new way is a huge challenge for Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and his gang. With that being said, the studios are now focusing only on the development of its Phase 4. Talking about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tran had this to say:
“Our focus right now is to make sure that the titles that we’ve released in Phase 4… obviously those stories are going to be new, exciting, different and can connect with the audience like the other movies have been. Over 10 years ago, it’s always been our dream to get to Infinity War and Endgame level. We didn’t know obviously where that was going to go at the start of the studio, but it’s incredible to know that we were able to accomplish that. Now it’d be amazing if we could get to that level 10 years later, so I think it’s a dream to continue doing that and build upon the MCU and the connective tissue that we have.”
Lately, Kevin Feige has been giving out a lot of information about what to expect in Phase 4 and probably Phase 5. With new stories ready to be explored, the MCU is also expanding further to join the small screen on the Disney+ streaming service. But, will Disney+ shows have any connection with the main Cinematic Universe? Trinh Tran had this to say.
“And now with obviously our Disney+ side and the shows and how our characters are venturing into that world and how that’s gonna lead to the future and more franchises and more stories and more properties and their connective tissue to the rest of the MCU, it would be amazing to do something like this 10 years later.”
Though everything seems to be well sorted out from the studio’s part, it seems like we have to wait further to see how well it all turns out. There are also many popular Fox products waiting to be explored by the studio. So hopes are high from the fans’ side.
Will there be an X-Men crossover anytime soon?! Or will be the Fantastic Four movie to happen first?! Tell us what you think about the Marvel’s Phase 4 plans
Kevin Feige Takes Control of the Creative Segment of Marvel Entertainment
by Emily Keen
News broke on Tuesday that Kevin Feige is promoted as the chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment. So in addition to being the President of the company, he will also oversee the creative process of Marvel Entertainment’ s film, TV and comic ventures.
How exactly does this shift in power change things for Marvel Entertainment?
The structural framework remains steady where Feige will report to Walt Disney’s Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Alan Horn and Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. Dan Buckley will continue as the President of Marvel TV but will now also report to Feige for creative and editorial issues in addition to checking in with Chairman Ike Perlmutter for operations, sales, games, and license. Meanwhile, Joe Quesada, Marvel CCO since 2010, will now serve as the creative lead and report directly to Buckley. Buckley shall also be responsible for supervising the creative executives in the publishing segment.
Besides Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s head of TV will now report to Kevin Feige and not to Dan Buckley.
Feige’s relationship with Marvel began in 2000 as the producer of X-Men. Feige has taken MCU to entirely new heights as the biggest Franchise of entertainment industry, grossing above $26 billion at the global box office across the past decade. He is also involved in the development of a Star-Wars movie for Lucasfilm owned by Disney. However, his career highlight came in 2019 with is Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time surpassing Avatar.
Apart from the new responsibilities, Feige remains the president of Marvel Studios and continues to direct the MCU into Phase 4. He will also partner with Sony for a third Spider-Man film in 2021. The upcoming releases of the studio include Black Widow and The Eternals set for release in 2020. Apart from the movies, there are multiple TV shows slated for Disney+ streaming service.
Tom Holland’s Drastic New Look Will Surely Leave You Stunned
by Kaylen Summers
Almost all moviegoers around the globe, know Tom Holland better as the Spiderman from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor’s career has been nothing short of success since his debut in the MCU. However, Holland is all set to push further and show off his acting skills outside the superhero genre. The actor even took a bold (bald, to be exact) new look for his upcoming movie Cherry.
In a recent video recorded for his fan, Holland can be seen in a drastic buzzcut look. The video is currently in the rounds and it looks like social media users have some thoughts on the matter.
The upcoming movie will see Holland teaming up again with the Russo Brothers. The pair had previously worked together in Marvel movies like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It was Civil War that Holland’s Spiderman was introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cherry is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Nico Walker. Penning the script for the movie will be Jessica Goldberg (The Path) and Angela Otstot (The Shield). Besides Holland, other major characters of the movie will be played by Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Ciara Bravo (Wayne), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Bill Skarsgard (IT Chapter two), Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce), Jeff Wahlberg (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), and Kyle Harvey (The After Party) round out the ensemble.
It is obvious that being an actor requires certain sacrifices. As for Tom Holland, it was his hair that needed to go for taking up the role in Cherry. Unfortunately, as always the internet is busy making fun of this new look than being logical. From comparisons to rapper Eminem to the children’s show character Caillou, most users seem to be upset that the actor’s new buzzcut.
Let’s all hope that we see Holland in his luscious locks soon.
Edward Norton Finally Reveals The Truth About Kevin Feige’s “Cheap” Press Release
by Kaylen Summers
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is surely one of the top movie franchises that Hollywood has ever seen. Though their movies are huge blockbusters at the box office, there are many deep dark secrets that the studio is trying to hide. One such secret is finally out from The Incredible Hulk Star Edward Norton. The actor finally revealed why he left the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his relationship with Kevin Feige.
It was in the second installment of Universal’s Hulk franchise that Norton took up the character. However, it didn’t last long and he eventually left the franchise making way for Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk.
After a long silence since then, the actor has opened up about the situation in detail. It was during a recent profile honoring Edward Norton’s new directorial effort Motherless Brooklyn that the actor revealed his views on the movie business. When asked about the friction with the brass at Marvel, he had this to say about it:
“Well, no. I loved the ‘Hulk’ comics,” Nortan explained, “I believed they were very mythic. And what Chris Nolan had done with Batman was going down a path that I aligned with: long, dark and serious. If there was ever a thing that I thought had that in it, it was the Hulk. It’s literally the Promethean myth. I laid out a two-film thing: The origin and then the idea of Hulk as the conscious dreamer, the guy who can handle the trip. And they were like, ‘That’s what we want!’ As it turned out, that wasn’t what they wanted. But I had a great time doing it. I got on great with Kevin Feige.”
It was obvious that these were not going great with him and Marvel. The studios even had Kevin Feige release a press release that said they were looking for someone who “embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members” for The Avengers. However, Norton looks back at that specific press release as cheap, and has this to say:
“Yeah, which was cheap. It was brand defensiveness or something. Ultimately they weren’t going for long, dark and serious. But it doesn’t matter. We had positive discussions about going on with the films, and we looked at the amount of time that would’ve taken, and I wasn’t going to do that. I honestly would’ve wanted more money than they’d have wanted to pay me. But that’s not why I would’ve wanted to do another ‘Hulk’ movie anyway. I went and did all the other things I wanted to do, and what Kevin Feige has done is probably one of the best executions of a business plan in the history of the entertainment industry. As a Disney shareholder, you should be on your feet for what they pulled off.”
Whatever the creative disagreements maybe, let us not forget that the MCU has generated billions at the box office and The Incredible Hulk still remains the lowest-grossing entry to date.
Is Mysterio Is STILL ALIVE?! Check Out This Awesome Fan Theory
by Kaylen Summers
We all have seen the fate of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio in the last Marvel movie, Spiderman: Far From Home. Though the fabulous villain fooled us for a moment with his inter-dimensional back story, all his illusions eventually came to an end. Or did it?!
Now a popular fan theory is suggesting that the character is pretty much alive and well. The theory advocates that it is because of this that Jake Gyllenhaal has refused to answer any questions of a possible return in the future movies.
Though it may sound over-the-top at first, it is possible. Over his long comic-book history, Mysterio is known for pulling out stunts like this and even faking his own death. One of the strongest reasons to believe that he did the same in his movie debut comes from how he got enough time to set up Peter Parker and reveal his true identity publicly. The cliffhanger was perfect in setting up the sequel. However, it does leave behind a major plothole regarding how Mysterio was able to pull off such a great scheme in his last minutes, and that too in a short interval of time.
According to the theory, Mysterio created the video after his battle with Peter Parker and fooling him that he is actually dead. Considering the amount of work that has gone in the mid-credits ‘news video’, it’s safe to assume that this could actually be true. And there is plenty of evidence to prove that too. So, lets put our Sherlock hat on and analyze them one by one.
EVIDENCE #1: Really Bad Timing.
The post-credit news-clip has Parker ordering the drones for execution. Though it was actually meant for disabling all the drones, our evil mastermind tweaked it to look as if spidey is the bad guy. However, in the original course of the movie, this actual scene happens after Mysterio is down struggling for his life. Anyone who does a side-by-side comparison of both scenes can easily understand the change in actors’ positions and timing.
EVIDENCE #2: The Suit.
The news clip shows the Spidey baddie in his suit. But, in the original sequence of the movie, he was just wearing his motion-tracking suit. Yes! Anyone can easily argue that it might be his team doing all the Vfx work. But why should anyone in his team bother to such an extent if there is no one to lead them?! Not to mention how rude Beck was with his teammates.
EVIDENCE #3: Here Is Some Nerdy Science Stuff.
When a person dies or loses consciousness, their pupil muscles become released and they are fully dilated. But in the scene where we see Mysterio laying motionless, this is never shown as he is both alive & conscious.
EVIDENCE #4: Who The Hell Would Make Such A Video When They Hit With Bullets And Dying ?!
(That doesn’t need any explanation!)
But, does this all really mean that Beck faked his own death?! Although it is really fun to think that the fake death is all part of a great contingency plan by Quentin Beck and his team, there is not much official back up to really hold this theory up.
If it did turn out to true, we would be really happy to see Jake Gyllenhaal back onscreen as Mysterio again in any of the future Spiderman films. But, at this point in time, there is no chance of it happening anytime soon.
Exclusive! Guess Who Will Be Directing Spiderman 3?!
by Kaylen Summers
Spiderman is busy making headlines lately and the latest one is about who will be directing the third installment coming out next year. Recent reports are revealing that Jon Watts is in final talks to direct Spider-Man 3, the continuation to this summer’s blockbuster hit Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Sony and Marvel Studios finally reaching a deal to bring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This means that Watts will be able to bring a conclusion to his trilogy, retaining his signature youthfulness and fun energy. With Jon Watts closing in on the deal to direct the threequel, it is obvious that the third installment (probably) will also be a huge success like the first two blockbusters.
Earning around $880 million, Spider-Man: Homecoming was a huge success at the box office. With the partnership paying off well for both studios, Sony was more than happy to let Peter Parker showed up in Civil War, Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The success was also reflected in the Far From Home as well, as it made over $1 billion. This inturn made it the highest-grossing movie ever for Sony.
As remarkable as these movies are, Jon Watt’s directorial style should also be mentioned as it played a huge factor in making the first two installments so profitable. With the director back on franchise, it’s obvious that the next one will also be a box office frontrunner.
Since the creative team behind the last two movies are back, we are also happy that we will be getting a proper explanation to the heavy cliffhanger at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. If everything goes smoothly with Sony and Marvel, there is also a chance that we will be seeing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in more MCU movies.
Spiderman 3 is set to hit theaters on July 16th, 2021.
Abominable Dominates the Weekend Box Office; But How?!
by Kaylen Summers
This weekend, it was the animated family movie Abominable which took the top position at the box office. Grossing in a $20.8 million cume domestically, the movie picked up an additional $10 million overseas, making a grand total to $30.8 million.
Directed by Jill Culton. the movie is the first animated Hollywood studio project to have a woman credited as the main director and writer. With the box office success over this past weekend, it is obvious that Culton is definitely celebrating.
In the second position is Downton Abbey, which previously occupied the top position. Continuation of the popular TV series, the movie earned $14.5 million and made $107.1 million globally. Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu starrer Hustlers secured the third position this weekend with a total earning of $11.4 million, with over $95 million collected globally.
Bringing in $10.4 million, Andres Muschietti’s IT Chapter Two is seated at the fourth position. Though the horror sequel didn’t make much impression compared to the first installment, it did manage to collect $417 million globally and doesn’t seem like stopping anytime soon.
The critically acclaimed Ad Astra earned $10.1 million and took the fifth spot this weekend. With Brad Pitt in the lead role, the movie opened to positive reviews last week.
Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo: Last Blood seems to fall down to number six this weekend with an $8.5 million cume. The long-awaited sequel was expected to be a front runner at the box office. However, with the negative feedback from critics and fans, marching back up the charts seems to be an impossible task at the moment.
Other movies in the top ten include the Judie Garland biopic, Judy at number seven and Good Boys at number eight. The comedy flick currently brought in a global grand total of $104 million. Disney’s Lion King still reins the box office with its ninth position and action thriller Angel Has Fallen at the tenth.
Here is the list of all the top ten movies of the weekend according to Box Office Mojo:
FIRST TIME EVER! Marvel To Release 4 MCU Movies in One Year. Here Is The List.
by Kaylen Summers
Just when you thought that all the dust is going to settle, Marvel Studios is back in the game, set to break new ground in the coming year. Four different big-screen MCU entries are slated for 2021.
First in the list will be Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings slated to release on February 12, 2021. Announced over the summer at San Diego Comic-Con, the movie will be part of MCU’s Phase 4 slate and will star Simu Liu as the titular martial arts master.
Then it will be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will hit the screen on May 7, 2021. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the movie will see Benedict Cumberbatch in his a solo movie sequel as the Sorcerer Supreme. Scarlet Witch will also be a part of this installment and Nightmare will be the main villain.
Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to release late on November 5, 2021. The movie will see Ragnarok director Taika Waititi back calling the shots and also the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. But, she will be more than just a pretty face this time, as the actress is set to become the Mighty Thor.
Though this was initially believed to be the slate for 2021, it seems like we got a final minute entry into the list. With Sony and Marvel finally getting back together, Spider-Man 3 will also be releasing on July 16 of 2021. However, little is known about the specifics of the deal. Still, MCU fans have a lot to cheer for in the coming year.
The studio has been releasing two movies a year for quite some time. It wasn’t until 2017 that three releases were made in a year- with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok. However, 2021 will surely be a crowded year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as this is the first time they are releasing four movies in a single year. Guess we have to wait and see how things turn out for the studios with such a year planned ahead.
2021 will mark the first time FOUR MCU films will be released in the same year.
SHANG-CHI’: Feb 12, 2021 ‘DOCTOR STRANGE 2’: May 7, 2021 ‘SPIDER-MAN 3’: July 16, 2021 ‘THOR: LOVE & THUNDER’: Nov 5, 2021
This Is How Marvel Stars Reacted To Spider-Man’s MCU Return
by Kaylen Summers
Spiderman has been in the talks for a long time now, following the closing of the Sony-Disney deal. With Sony, officially announcing their slate for the future Spiderman movies, it seemed like nothing was going to turn things around. However, recent reports reveal that our friendly neighborhood web-slinger is not leaving the MCU after all.
Both studios have finally come to can agreement the character stay in the shared universe for some more time. Yet, for how many more movies or time period is still unknown.
That being said, we are super excited to hear the news and it seems like we are not alone. Some of the Marvel stars have also expressed their happiness on Spidey’s return and top of the list is none other than Tom Holland. The Spiderman actor too it to his instagram with a short clip from Leonardo DiCaprio’s Wolf of Wall Street.
Though Holland’s perfect reaction to the reunion news was really impressive, it was Spider-Man: Far From Home star Zendaya who was first to post her reaction on social media. Posted a gif of a dancing Spider-Man, her reaction summed up the way how a lot of fans felt.
Though fans and stars are happy to hear the news, we all know that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is the happiest person of them all. Spiderman’s departure from the MCU would have been a pretty big blow to the MCU at the moment.
Why Fox Movies Are Continuously Failing After The Merger? Disney CEO Explains
by Kaylen Summers
Walt Disney’s acquisition streak made history earlier this year when it officially took over 20th Century Fox’s assets. The move not only changed the modern-day media landscape, but also how Fox studios was functioning in recent years. While it’s obvious that the studio is experiencing something of a cinematic slump, the fuzz surrounding the topic had to finally settle down with Disney CEO Bob Iger speaking out about it. In a recent interview, Iger revealed the status of the assets before the deal and how Fox’s movies were not making any profit.
He explained: “It wasn’t a slap-down. It was an admission that the movies that they had made failed. And I actually gave then a tremendous amount of cover by saying that when companies are bought, processes and decision making can come to a halt.
“There were problems at that studio well before the deal was announced. But the reason I did not believe that it was something we should be concerned about is. Because it’s a short-term problem. And with the talent that we have at our studio, that are now supervising with some of their executives all the movies that they decide to make and how they are made, I’m convinced that the turnaround can happen. It’s not a snap your fingers, but it’s not 10 years of lost value. It’s a year and a half.”
It was earlier this year that Disney closed the $71.3 billion deal to finally acquire Fox. The Mouse House inevitably took over the majority of the company’s media assets including all of the 20th Century Fox movie studio and popular movie franchises like X-men and Avatar. However, the real problem started when movies that were already completed by Fox prior to the merger got released by Disney. These movies performed worse at the box office and eventually ended up as flops. Ultimately, over an underwhelming quarter, the studio ended up with $170 million in operational losses alone.
It is obvious that with a major merger like this, it takes time to finally get things in place. Fortunately, Bob Iger has no problem taking time and fixing it. And he has every reason to be confident about it too as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is already in the works for Fox’s Marvel properties, such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Feige is known for creating big returns from often what is called B-class or C-class franchises by turning them into blockbusters. Take the journey from Ironman to Endgame for example.
If Disney can work out similar magic on the rest of Fox’s catalog, then the future will be looking bright for them. But till then it will be more or less a process of rip it up and start again. Only time will prove whether Fox was a good investment for Disney like Marvel, Pixar or Lucasfilm. But, someone like Bob Iger, who has consistently proved he knows what he’s doing, it is just a matter of time till we see the next big blockbuster from Fox. (We are definitely talking about you, Avatar)
Taking Spider-Man Out Of The MCU Is A “Tragic Mistake”, Joe Russo Says
by Kaylen Summers
For more than a month, everybody has been talking about Spider-Man leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the offers from Marvel Studios turned down, the franchise will be entirely handled by the Sony. However, like always there are two sides to the story, and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo think that Sony’s attempt to replicate the success of Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is a “tragic” mistake.
The Russo Brothers have been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Though they are a part of the Marvel Studios family, their side of the story is also worth considering, specifically with how they have successfully used Spider-Man in movies like Civil War to Endgame.
Talking about the Spider-Man situation a few weeks ago, the Russos admitted that they were not surprised by the split between Marvel Studios and Sony. Recently, the directors spoke again in another interview about how hard it was to reach a deal in the first place and how the future will be for Spidey to leave MCU now. Joe Russo had this to say:
“It was so difficult to get him (Spider-Man) into Civil War. It was an extremely long and hard process. But we were driven to help make it happen. But (Marvel Studios President) Kevin Feige pulled it off, somehow. Disney and all the good people at Sony found a way to make it work and it lasted a few films. We had a wonderful experience with that and I think audiences really appreciated that marriage. But we know how hard that marriage was to make in the first place, so the fact that the marriage fell apart isn’t really that surprising to me and Joe.”
Russo also mentioned that the relationship between Marvel Studios and Sony wasn’t always easy to deal with, as sharing one of the biggest superheroes in the world with a rival studio is a bitter pill to swallow. Yet, the short-lived the relationship with the two studios was incredibly fruitful for both and to go on without Marvel Studios is a mistake, according to Joe Russo.
He explains: “It was a tenuous, fraught union throughout the whole process. But, I will say, stepping back and trying to be objective as possible, that I think it’s a tragic mistake on Sony’s part to think that they can replicate Kevin’s penchant for telling incredible stories and the amazing success he has had over the years. I think it’s a big mistake.”
Whatever the case may be, a lot of Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are agreeing with Joe Russo. It is true that Sony had a huge part in making Spider-Man successful. However, their track record for handling the Web-Slinger has not always been so great. Not to mention the lack of someone like Kevin Feige with storytelling skills.
Recent announcements from Sony is revealing that they have plans to bring the Spider-Verse all together under one umbrella. Though fans definitely want to see Tom Hardy and Tom Holland together on the big screen, will Sony be able to pull it off in a satisfying way is the bigger question. Guess we will have to wait a little longer to see how things will turn out, as Sony’s Venom 2 is expected to hit theatres in 2021.
After the severe backlash following Spiderman’s departure, Marvel is trying to calm their fans down with some good casting announcements. Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige revealed at this year’s D23 Expo that the Game of Thrones starKit Harington will be playing the role of Dane Whitman a.k.a Marvel’s Black Knight in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe flick The Eternals.
For MCU fans, the news comes with tremendous excitement. However, the real cherry on top came when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige sat down with ‘Good Morning America’ backstage at D23 Expo. When asked about Kit Harington’s newest role, Feige shared that we will be seeing more of the character’s presence in the franchise than just his debut movie.
“He’s a really amazing actor, and this part came up in The Eternals film that we’re doing,” Feige said, “We were so happy when he agreed to join, and it is a part that could perhaps grow into something else in the future.”
Whitman first appeared in The Avengers #47 way back in the 1960s. Descendent to the original Black Knight and nephew to the villainous second Black Knight, Harington’s character is the third to bear the Black Knight moniker. After his evil uncle perished after a fight with everyone’s favorite billionaire, Iron Man, Whitman inherited the Ebony Blade- a cursed, mystical sword that has been passed down from generation to generation. He then takes up the Black Knight title to restore honor to his family name. The Character has been a longtime member many different versions of Avengers’ throughout the history of Marvel Comics. He has also joined up with other popular teams like the ‘Defenders’ and ‘Heroes for Hire’.
With the arrival of Disney’s streaming service, Marvel will have more creative freedom to explore new characters and stories. A Black Knight TV series can possibly help Harington’s role to grow into something bigger. But, all have to wait till Phase 5 as Marvel’s Phase 4 schedule seems to be complete.
Idris Elba Wants to Return as Heimdall. Will It Be In ‘Thor 4’ or ‘Loki’?
by Kaylen Summers
Idris Elba is one of those actors who joined the MCU during its early days. The actor first made his appearance as Heimdall in 2011’s Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh and went on to play the role in both Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. Elba also made a brief appearance in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and in Avengers: Infinity War- where the character met his unfortunate end in the hands of the mad titan.
Now, it seems like the actor is hoping to return back to the franchise. That’s pretty ironic coming from Elba, as the actor clearly expressed his remorse in playing the character with a wig and contact lenses for hours. He even blasted the experience in an interview from five years ago.
However, during a recent appearance on ABC Radio that Elba was asked about his role in the MCU to this point and in the future. Though character perished in the opening scenes of Infinity War, the actor was pretty open in expressing his desire to return back to the franchise.
“Of course,” the actor said. “Listen, Heimdall is essentially part of the god family. So you know, he essentially could be alive. I’m just saying! I’m just putting it out there. The Heimdall character goes way back into, you know, the Thor mythology, And I’m sure there will be an interesting way to bring that alive. Of course, I would. Yes.”
Loki also died in Infinity War, but we will be seeing him in the upcoming series show on Disney+. So, as true fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we don’t mind seeing Thor’s best pal and keeper of the Bifrost back in action once again.
With that being said, the only thing left is to decide when and where we can expect Heimdall’s return. Of course, Loki’s upcoming show is a perfect place as the story is taking place on a different timeline formed as a consequence of the ‘time heist’ in Endgame. However, it will be more sensible for the actor to be returning back in Waititi’s 2021 film, Thor: Love and Thunder. If that’s not working out with Fegie, there is also Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3. Who knows. Maybe we will be seeing some ‘Asgardians of the Galaxy’ after all.
What do you think? Is there any possible way for Heimdall to return back to the MCU? Or is it the last of him? Let us know in the comments below.
This Endgame Deleted Scene Will Make You Emotional All Over Again
by Kaylen Summers
Avengers Endgame marked the end for one of the most epic cinematic saga in movie history. The death Tony Stark towards the end of the movie left us with teary eyes. However, months after Avengers: Endgame, a new exclusive deleted scene from the film was unveiled online and MCU fans may need some more tissues.
The clip shows the heartbreaking moment when Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man/Tony Stark sacrifices his life to save the universe on the battlefield. Instead of the scene fading into black, as shown in the theatrical release, the Avengers are seen paying a touching tribute to Iron Man.
Pepper Potts gives Tony Stark a final kiss as the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes slowly dropping to one knee in honor of the fallen Avenger. Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is the first to kneel and bow his head. Soon, one after the other, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Nebula (Karen Gillian), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) kneel down in front of the fallen hero.
Though the scene does not appear to be completely finished in terms of CGI, an extra minute of footage would have been a worthy addition to the Avengers: Endgame rerelease a few weeks ago and MCU fans would probably have responded to it better. Whatever the case may be, the rerelease did help the movie become the highest-grossing movie of all time, beating out James Cameron’s Avatar.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained in an email about why they excluded the moment: “It’s a beautiful scene with moving performances, but we filmed it prior to Tony Stark’s funeral. The funeral scene ultimately became a more resonant and emotional reflection on Tony’s death for us.”
What do you think about the deleted scene? Watch the clip and let us know:
Live-Action Akira Movie Has Been Delayed For ‘Thor 4’.
by Kaylen Summers
It looks like Marvel loves sidestepping Warner Bros. in every way possible. First, it was with James Gunn. After being fired by Disney, the writer-director was hired by WB for doing a soft reboot of their Suicide Squad. Hearing the news, Marvel immediately hired Gunn back to his Guardians project(Though Gunn ensured fans that he will be going for Suicide Squad first). Now, Marvel is at it again and this time it is with Taika Waititi.
Waititi and Warner Bros.’ live-action Akira movie has been put back on hold as the director is turning his attention to Thor 4 next. The project is based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1982 manga and 1988 anime feature of the same name. WB has spent more than a decade trying to get the project off ground. Many directors including Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) and Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) were involved with different earlier iterations of the project. However, all of them were eventually abandoned.
It was in September 2017 that Waititi got officially attached to direct Akira. But, the movie only received an official 2021 release date less than two months ago and was planning to go into production by the end of this year (or early 2020). With the director now signing for Thor 4 over at Marvel Studios, Akira is going to have to wait.
According to new reports, Warner Bros. has officially announced the delay for Akira, citing script and budgetary concerns as the reason. The similar scenario occurred earlier in 2012 when Jaume Collet-Serra was assigned to direct the movie. Just days ahead of filming, the plug was pulled over budgetary issues.
On the other hand, it is unlikely for the studio to look for another director, considering that Waititi has come as close as anybody else to finally making the live-action Akira a reality. Besides that the studio has already invested too much into the project that waiting for two more years will not be a huge deal.
Thor 4 is expected to begin shooting within the next year and probably hit the theatres by 2021 or 2022. So, till then there won’t be much happening with Akira (if everything goes as expected).
Will Millie Bobby Be Starring In Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’?
by Kaylen Summers
Netflix’s Stranger Things is making quite a buzz with the release of its third season last week. However, that’s not the only buzz that circulates around Stranger Things star, Millie Bobby Brown. Reports say that the 15-year-old superstar is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for upcoming The Eternals movie. Since there hasn’t been any official confirmation, it is obvious to take the news with a grain of salt.
Eternals are a group of immortal ancient aliens offshoots created by Jack Kirby. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finished its third phase, the multi-billion dollar franchise is keeping its possibilities for Phase 4, and most probably it will be kickstarting the new phase with The Eternals. The movie is said to be directed by Chloé Zhao, starring Keanu Reeves, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Maddenand, and Salma Hayek.
Earlier this year Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige told Collider about the possibility of the movie:
“Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people.
“You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”
If the Stranger Things star is joining the movie, then Marvel will have a solid cast moving forward into Phase 4.
Endgame Re-release: It couldn’t be more disappointing than this.
by Kaylen Summers
It was not shocking news when Marvel and Disney announced the re-release of Avengers: Endgame. The movie was truly the culmination of over a decade’s worth of blockbuster movies and one of the biggest events in cinematic history. It had everything it needed to nab the top position in worldwide box office from Avatar.
However, from the reports that are coming in, things are not looking bright for Marvel. While the blockbuster initially received rave reviews from fans and critics alike, the re-release didn’t give much for the fans as expected. Though the studios promised additional footage and post-credit scenes, all that fans were left with was a Stan Lee tribute, an unfinished deleted scene with the Hulk, and a sneak peek at Spider-Man: Far From Home.
The unfinished deleted scene shows the Hulk putting kids in a big dish and jumping down the burning building with them. It is then that Steve Rogers calls him on the phone, to which he answers: “Steve who?!”. These extra footages are already leaked online. Meanwhile, the Far From Home sneak peek offers nothing more than what the movie’s trailer had already given.
Die-hard fans who flocked at theatres to watch the movie were disappointed to the core. Considering that it came from the most well-planned studio in Hollywood right now, the re-release felt as if the studio had taken advantage of their devoted fans for their cynical and desperate attempt to dethrone Avatar.
So, where did marvel fail?! The simple truth is that Marvel didn’t have anything new to offer with its re-release. There’s nothing wrong with doing a re-release, but the additional content has to make the rewatch worth it. It’s important to note that when Avatar was re-released, James Cameron stitched nine minutes of new footage back into the movie with completely finished CGI. This gave the re-release a sense of value to it, compared with the one crappy unfinished deleted scene that is not even in the actual film.
The end result is that Endgame is still somewhere around $35 million away from James Cameron’s 2010 blockbuster. Interestingly enough, that won’t be a problem for Disney. The studio has recently acquired Fox which owns the rights to Avatar. A sequel to this blockbuster is also in pre-production for a December 2020 release, with Cameron back on the director’s chair.
Guess, Disney always win!!
Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four…
Once upon a time, the annual San Diego Comic Con was an event that celebrated comic books. Today, it still does that, but the focus has shifted to what most geeks really care about: movies and TV. And every year, the biggest moments in the convention are the reveals of new trailers that get us all buzzing. Now, we did get a trailer for the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody right before the Con, and one for Alita: Battle Angel right after, but this post is about the 10 best trailers revealed during the Con itself.
After the lackluster financial performance of last year’s Justice League, Warner Bros is hoping that James Wan’s (The Conjuring, Furious 7) Aquaman can be the movie that rights the ship for their DC movies. Now I’m in the minority when I say I’m not a fan of Wan’s work, and this trailer didn’t particularly help with my excitement for this movie. So many one-liners are stuffed into Arthur Curry’s (Jason Momoa, Game of Thrones) mouth, it feels less like a superhero movie and more like Fast & Furious. That said, what did impress me was the epic scope of Atlantis mixed with a personal core conflict. While I am looking forward to the movie, it will release on December 21, the same weekend as Mary Poppins and Welcome to Marwen, so it will have to do something really special in order to stand out.
9. Star Wars: The Clone Wars
The beloved animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars ended years ago without being able to wrap up its plot, leaving many fans dissatisfied. Now, to the delight of many, the series will get the conclusion fans have been clamouring for, and this trailer gives a good feeling for what it will look like. While I appreciate the rousing music and was impressed by the opening shot with the row of Stormtrooper helmets, the reason the trailer places this low on the list is that just like the previous seasons, the art style and the animation simply do not look very good.
8. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
When I saw David Yates’s 2016 movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, my reaction was much the same as my reaction to this trailer: it’s good, I just wish it was great. The movie managed to recreate the awe and wonder we associate with the magical world, but fell short when it came to the lead characters played by Eddie Redmayne and crew. Newt Scamander and his three friends are simply not as interesting to follow as Harry, Ron and Hermione were, and that’s the soul of the world Rowling has created. Fortunately, the sequel has two advantages. First, we see Newt’s time at Hogwarts, which led to the best moments in the trailer. And second, we have here two characters far more interesting than any of the leads, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore and the controversial Johnny Depp as the dark wizard Grindelwald. While I don’t expect much depth from the moral conflict of “should muggles be ruled over by wizards and witches?”, I do expect depth in the characterisation of Dumbledore and his relationship with Grindelwald.
Matt Groening, beloved creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, returns with his third satirical animated comedy, Disenchanted. The Netflix series follows a princess who, just like Princess Merida in Brave, chooses to escape the plan society has for her, and goes off an a fantastical adventure with her magical companions. I honestly don’t have much to say about this trailer. This is a comedy, its purpose is to make me laugh: the trailer made me laugh. The first 10 episodes will drop on Netflix on August 17, and I will be there to watch them.
Gareth Edwards’s 2014 monster movie Godzilla was not received well, and for good reason. While the scenes featuring the titular creature were appropriately epic, far too much time was spent with an uninteresting human lead played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The sequel, directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat), seems to realise this, as the focus seems to be shifted to the monsters themselves. The human characters, played by Millie Bobby Brown, Sally Hawkins and Vera Farmiga seem a tad more interesting than last time, but who cares when you’ve got Godzilla encountering the three-headed dragon Ghidorah? I particularly loved how the trailer balanced the terror of these monsters with their beauty and their majesty. Done right, this could be something special. But even otherwise, it’ll at least be a fun kaiju movie.
5. Iron Fist
This very short teaser impresses the hell out of me. Everything wrong with season 1 seems to have been fixed, and this looks like the Iron Fist we’ve always wanted to see. During the events of The Defenders, Danny grew as a person through his interactions with Matt Murdock, and when he showed up in one episode of Luke Cage season 2, people loved this mature version of him. This teaser, in addition to having terrific action, shows us that improved Danny, a street level hero committed to protecting Hell’s Kitchen.
This trailer is absolutely delightful. Not only is it great to see a kid who fights bullies rewarded with superpowers, there’s something very exciting about the idea of teaming up a superhero with a kid who loves superheroes. Zachary Levi is charming as hell in his portrayal of a child in the body of an adult, and his banter with his best friend is endearing. I have little hope for Aquaman, but this really could turn the tides for DC, especially since it’s followed by two movies that both also look like they could be good, Wonder Woman 1984 and Joker.
3. Young Justice: Outsiders
Like The Clone Wars, Young Justice is another beloved animated series that ended way too soon. It left us fans with a cliffhanger that was frustrating because the show had been going so well! Clearly, I’m very invested in this story, and might not be completely unbiased in evaluating the trailer, but to me it represented the best of what I love about the first two seasons, the smooth animation and complex relationships. This is easily my most anticipated TV series of 2018, and the trailer lived up to the hype.
I had no idea why I was so excited for Glass. I thought Unbreakable was good, Split was better, but I didn’t exactly fall in love with either film. This trailer made it clear: I’m excited for Glass because of the potential for greatness, not the likelihood of it. There’s already so much to explore in the interaction between a super-strong guy, a super-smart guy, and, well, whatever James McAvoy is, and the addition of Sarah Paulson just makes it more interesting. The trailer knew to tease just the right questions, like what is Anya Taylor-Joy saying to James McAvoy and why? If done right, this will complete M. Night Shyamalan’s resurgence.
1. The Dragon Prince
Look, Avatar: The Last Airbender is not just the greatest animated series I have ever seen, it’s one of my favourite TV shows ever. The Dragon Prince, the new Netflix series from Aaron Ehasz, who was the head writer on Avatar: The Last Airbender, looks like it has all the elements that made it a great story. It’s an epic fantasy with humour, action and magic, and some of the shots in the trailer are truly breathtaking, especially the dragon at the end. Moreover, the medieval setting looks good too, and opens up the potential for complex political storylines. Most importantly, though, I just can’t wait to get lost in the vast fantasy world and learn the rules for how magic works here.
So what about you? Which trailers were your favourite? Which movies and series are you most excited for?
This year has been full of nail biting and heart thumping moments in all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ant-Man and The Wasp is set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Everyone here is facing the consequences of the incidents in Civil War while the audience is all too aware of the looming dread.
Reed’s superheroes are better suited to the grand scale of Marvel now than they were in 2015’s Ant-Man. But he never makes the action too over-powering though the fast paced visual changes are just as dizzying. With this movie, we are diving head-first into the quantum realm, and the rules are a little thinly drawn.
The movie opens with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), the Ant-Man being your average Joe. He plays with his daughter, trying to keep his small security company afloat but he is on parole and hasn’t left his home in over two years. It’s all dull and obvious until Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), the Wasp abducts him while putting his freedom at risk two days before his parole was over. Hope and her father Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) are set on rescuing her mother from where she is still stuck in the quantum realm. Scott holds some key information without even realising it. But there are too many opposing forces and a tug of war ensues based on different motives. It is stretched at times but the movie manages to pull through with steady pacing and action.
Rudd plays a superhero with a stronger emotional feel and clever jokes but Evangeline’s Hope steals the show. She is skeptical and is in control enough to not give away any control to the usual superhero charm. The two of them come together for an equal partnership with a refreshing dynamic. Michael Peña, playing Luis, Scott’s former cell mate and business partner, brings one of the best comic sequences with a “truth serum” gag that will remain memorable.
All along, the movie is happy basking in its cleverness. Scott at one points asks if they just “put quantum in front of everything” they say and answer is pretty much a yes. I called the movie an indulgence in the beginning because it slows down in moments that hold no plot significance, just pure scientific fascination. The close up magic tricks are employed for quick laughs but the easy resizing of objects throughout the movie doesn’t feel deeper either. No one is trying hard, but it’s kind of a reprieve for the core audience who has had much trauma already.
At times the movie feels like filler, giving us characters arcs, actions and humour but only to hurtle to the end point. We are going somewhere bigger. It would be difficult to stay away from that sentiment until the next Avengers. But the easy going nature of the movie, along with its emotional appeal and the usual Marvel charm, makes it a worthwhile watch.
After heavy hitters like Black Panther and Infinity War over the past few months, Deadpool 2 was a much-needed breather for the audience.
Marvel is no stranger to humour but Deadpool has the kind of humour where no one is safe from it, not even the movie itself. With too many witty remarks to choose from, the movie thrives on its lead’s inability to die. It charms the plot by using this to dig the humour deeper, playing on puns, mocking the usual tropes and breaking the fourth wall to slam the audiences with sheer entertainment. Deadpool has its sombre moments but never takes itself too seriously. When it’s sombre, it takes a jab at the hero’s inability to die.
Deadpool’s friend Al tells him, “You can’t live if you don’t die a little.” Deadpool 2 takes the philosophy to heart. A franchise built on never-ending snark throws its superhero into emotional turmoil 5 minutes into the movie. Fiancée Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) are reunited but not for long. The story then forces a near-suicidal Deadpool into understanding his heart to save lives both in the present and the future. He is joined by a league of superheroes (or close enough) including Cable (Josh Brolin), a time travelling cybernetic mutant soldier and Domino (Zazie Beetz), a mutant whose superpower is luck. The mission is to either save or stop a 14-year-old mutant, Russell/Firefist (Julian Dennison), who wants revenge for years of torture.
Director David Leitch (John Wick and Atomic Blonde) takes up the strengths of the first one and webs them within better emotional appeal in Deadpool 2. The entire cast is diverse and refreshing but Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) especially seems to be tailor-made for his role. The movie doesn’t limit the characters within any usual tropes and the joy of his performance bears witness to that. And behind all that allure, the film’s sound and music mesh perfectly with the dramatic sequences and mocking overtones.
Deadpool 2 is a one-man monologue in an insufferable universe and his antics seem to spread like an infection to the rest of the members. Everything and everyone within it is in a state of constant collision. But while it plays the same old game with new rules, or rather no rules, it can be tiring underneath it all. The movie sneers at the tried and dried but it isn’t trying to be all that different. The relentless self-mockery covers for a commonplace plot and pretty ambiguous rules guiding its mechanics.
At the end of the day, Deadpool 2 is a rare comic reprieve. It’s gorier than ever, and more self-aware. Definitely worth the price of admission.
