6 Best Comic Book Movies on Hulu

by Emily Keen

The modern comic genre was launched by Superman The Movie in 1978. And from then on DC has pretty much dominated the game of superhero comics. They launched multiple comic characters that went on to become cult favorites of millions around the world. Over the years Marvel also gained a strong foothold with their set of comic-based films in business. From then on it’s pretty much the battle between these two giants and of course their fans who are ready for a showdown debate over who’s best anytime. Here is a list of comic book-based films you can stream on Hulu right away:

  1. Professor Marston and The Wonder Woman

Image result for professor marston and the wonder womanDirected by Angela Robinson the film deals with the origin of wonder woman’s character and the man who was behind the creation. Professor Marston and his unusual family challenged the traditional norms of family life and relationships which ultimately leads him to design the character of Wonder woman. Inspired by the characters of the two women in his life and how their elliptical idea of love shapes wonder woman. The film also scans the struggles and criticisms the comic goes through before being accepted by audiences.

  1. Ingrid Goes West

Image result for Ingrid Goes West moviePlaying heavily on the theme of Social media obsession the film follows the life of Ingrid who becomes obsessed with a social media queen, Taylor. Things get interesting and they become friends and Ingrid eventually moves places to be with her. But as time passes, Ingrid begins to realize that Taylor isn’t actually who she is on social media.

  1. Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds

Image result for Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds movieThe commonplace idea of an afterlife, blown into a high concept movie! The film centers around a firefighter who dies on duty and is now facing a trial in his afterlife and must prove himself worthy of reincarnation. Although his story holds the plot together the film is really about the guardians who help him navigate through the challenges in the in-between the two worlds.

  1. Super

Image result for Super movieHilarious, unapologetic and dark is quite the bizarre amalgamation of ideas that you would expect from a superhero movie. But this is it! The film follows the life of Frank D’Arbo who loses his wife to a drug dealer and retaliates vigilante style. He transforms himself into a superhero called Crimson Bolt and goes on a punishing spree with a Wrench. Yes, that is his weapon of choice.

  1. Batman and Bill

Image result for Batman and Bill movieWe know for a fact that the Batman comics were created by Bob Kane. But apparently there was another man who had a huge role to play in bringing the caped crusader’s avatar to life and even Robin. His name was Bill Finger. Batman and Bill is a documentary that explores Bill’s contribution to Batman comics and tells us why he was not credited with the work he deserves the credit for.

  1. I Kill Giants

Image result for I Kill Giants movieThe fantasy thriller directed by Anders Walter and written by Joe Kelly follows the life of a weird child with incredible powers. That may not be evident at the very beginning since this is revealed and Barbara’s character arc is low key a slow burn. She believes there are giants living amongst us, the ones only she can see and kills them. The film has a very unique touch to the setting and the mood which is not all bleak and not all happy. It’s just the right balance between the real-world and Barbara’s fantasy world.

Here Is Why ‘Hell Boy 3’ Was Never Adapted Into A Comic Book

by Kaylen Summers

After the first two movies, fans of Hellboy waited nearly a decade to see if the filmmaker would be closing down the trilogy with Hellboy 3. Unfortunately, del Toro announced in early 2017 that the movie would not be made and later the studio announced that it would be rebooting the franchise.

While appearing at  Comic Con International in San Diego last week, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola was asked the obvious, inevitable question: Why not publish that story as a comic, and get some return-on-investment for all the money spent developing the project? And Mignola answered the question in a pretty simple way:

“I think del Toro mentioned it to me once, and I said no. I think, let the comics be the comics. Comics are confusing enough for people. Let’s not have two different versions of the Hellboy comic out there. My vote would be (to say) no.”

hellboy-3-movie1

Mignola was referring to how confusing it is for some DC and Marvel superhero fans from having multiple versions of their favorite characters coexisting within sprawling multiverses. Comics can get overly complicated, with numerous continuities running side by side until the whole thing has to explode with an event like Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Mignola had co-written drafts of the Hellboy 3 script and went on to consult with the reboot once it was decided to take the franchise in a new direction.  Even if the third installment of the original movie is not going to be released, there is always a chance for the screenplay getting printed or an animated version of the script being released. We already have such movies like Hellboy: Sword of Storms and Hellboy: Blood and Iron, which were set in the continuity of the Guillermo del Toro movies.

Then again, considering how poorly the Hellboy reboot performed at the box office, maybe a little bit of multiverse-madness won’t be hurtful after all. Come on Mignola! Give us the threequel we deserve!!

Here Is What Former ‘Catwomen’ Think Of Zoe Kravitz’s Casting

by Kaylen Summers

It’s official! Zoe Kravitz will be putting on her ‘cat costume’ for Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman movie. The actress will be playing the coveted role of Selina Kyle against Robert Pattinson’s cape crusader this time.

Zoe Kravitz made her acting debut in the 2007 film No Reservations. However, her breakthrough role came from another superhero movie- X-Men: First Class (2011). The actress went on to give memorable performances in movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Now, Kravitz is all set to bring the popular comic-book character back onscreen, and she is getting a lot of support, especially from some of the other ladies who’ve previously played Catwoman on the big screen.

The character first made her appearance in comics as ‘The Cat’ in Batman #1 (1940). However, Catwoman was eventually transitioned into an anti-heroine rather than a supervillainess of Batman.

When the casting for the character began many actresses were rumored to play the role. It was only recently that Kravitz got officially confirmed to play the role and most fans were on board with the idea. Not just the fans, former Catwoman actresses Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, and Halle Berry are now also offering their support to Kravitz as well.

Michelle Pfeiffer welcomed Kravitz into the clowder while addressing about the casting in the Good Morning America. Pfeiffer who played Selina Kyle in the Tim Burton sequel Batman Returns, even had some “important” advice for the actress: “Make sure, whilst designing the costume, they consider how you’re gonna go to the bathroom.”

On the other hand, Halle Berry who took on the role for the standalone movie Catwoman, praised the casting choice on her Twitter, saying: “Special shout-out to your new Catwoman, the eternally graceful & extremely badass Zoe Kravitz. Keep shining Queen & welcome to the family!”

Anne Hathaway who had the most recent portrayal of the character made her opinion clear in a post on her Instagram account. “The biggest congrats to Zoë Kravitz on landing the role of a lifetime”, says Hathaway. “Well, one life anyway…⁣⁣ Enjoy the ride, Selina,”

The Batman is expected to hit theaters on June 25, 2021. With the casting progressing swiftly, it won’t be long since we see the movie head into production.

Are Captain Marvel and Valkyrie the Rainbow Lovers of MCU?

by Emily Keen

Marvel has already made a strong statement by letting its women fight the biggest war alongside its men. But people really want Marvel to be explicit in their support to the LGBTQ community as well. Fans have come up with a sizzling theory of Captain Marvel romancing the Valkyrie in the upcoming movies.

Valkyrie is the first openly bisexual hero of the Marvel universe. But until yet, this has not been made evident in any of the movies. Now that Endgame officially upstaged her as the new ruler of Asgard, fans cannot wait to know more about her life.

There is strong proof about Tessa’s character being bisexual in the comics. But the comic’s version of Valkyrie finds her love interest in Annabelle Riggs. Captain Marvel’s sexuality has however been kept under wraps until now. The comic book version of Captain Denvers is straight. But there also exists a gay version of the character.

Both Larson and Thompson, however, do not mind setting screens on fire with their romance.

In a recent interview during ACE comic con, Chicago they were quite supportive of the idea.

Brie said “We’re here to ship, ya’ll! We can dig into it, I’m just telling you we’re shipping,”. While Tessa backed Larson by adding “Brie is my real-life queen, in general. If it becomes canon, that’s cool, too.”

Both actors share a great friendship offscreen.

Brie even tweeted a fan art last march which showcased their Marvel characters in a romantic embrace.

And a few days later, Tessa Thompson returned the gesture.

This is not the first speculation around Valkyrie’s love interest. There has been much buzz regarding the probable lady love of Asgard’s new ruler.

A few days earlier Jamie Alexander’s Lady Sif had volunteered to be the queen.

Jamie-alexander-volunteers-to-be-valkyrie's-queen

A few think Jane Foster’s return in Thor: Love and Thunder could probably be a new chapter in valkyrie’s life. Looks like we have many Marvel women crushing over the female warrior.

It is too early to decide if Captain Marvel and Valkyrie will be portrayed as a couple given their crucial roles in two separate movies. The realization of this theory will need a strong and convincing narrative that resonates with the audience. And fans can sure afford to be wrong about theories, but not being disappointed with the script.

EXCLUSIVE! It Looks Like Batman and Joker Will Face-off At Oscars This Year.

by Kaylen Summers

There is no doubt the Todd Philips’ Joker will be a worthy contender at the Oscars this year. Grossing a weekend collection of $96 million at the domestic box office and $248 million worldwide, the movie is clearly triumphing at the theatres. Joaquin Phoenix’s power-packed portrayal of Arthur Fleck and his gradual descent into a homicidal maniac is nothing short of excellence.

However, it seems like the new Batman will be chasing down his arch-nemesis at the Oscars too. Recent reports are confirming that Robert Pattinson will be competing at the Oscars next year for his performance in ‘The Lighthouse‘. A24 has officially submitted the actor for award consideration.

Pattinson will be competing in the lead actor category while co-star Willem Dafoe’s name has been submitted for the supporting actor field. The Lighthouse made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and received immense critical acclaim. Though the movie is yet to be released in theaters, it has already established itself as one of 2019’s must-see movies.

The Lighthouse is director Robert Eggers’ homage to the classic black-and-white horror movies era. The movie takes place in the 1890s and talks about two lighthouse keepers (Pattinson and Dafoe). Their isolation and loneliness drive them into insanity.

With the movie already being referred to as a classic, all is now left to see is whether it will take the ‘clown prince of crime’ down. If given his first Oscar nomination, it will huge milestone in Pattinson’s career as he is all set to play ‘cape-crusader’ in the upcoming The Batman.

Joker, on the other hand, has already made its moves for Oscar, as the movie had a special show at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre on Saturday. However, the reactions for it were mixed. The movie was already receiving similar critical responses long before, which gave its 69% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score and a B+ on CinemaScore.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until the nominations are officially declared to see how far this battle will go. Check out Spotflik again for future updates about this.

First Production Photo Reveals Half of The Suicide Squad Cast Together

by Kaylen Summers

Christmas comes early as fans of the DC’s cinematic universe got a glimpse of what the cast for the upcoming The Suicide Squad movie will look like. A part of the cast involved in the project met with James Gunn over the weekend and the director shared a picture of himself with them. Margot Robbie, who will be reprising the role of Harley Quinn from the first installment was not to be seen in the picture as she is currently working on the reshoots for Birds of Prey.

Familiar faces in the photo include Nathan Fillion (Firefly) alongside David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Flula Borg (Pitch Perfect), Daniela Melchior, Mayling Ng, and Jennifer Holland.

The image also includes a caption from Gunn saying, “Hanging out with part of The Suicide Squad team this weekend. What a great group of people!”

It seems like the director is clearly excited to finally get to work on the movie and as fans, we are also eager to see what Gunn has in store for us with such an extended cast. However, we have to wait till summer 2021 for the movie to finally hit theatres.

It was only a few weeks ago that the full cast of the movie was revealed. The list included stars like Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis and Joel Kinnaman from the original movie with a lot of new members including Steve Agee, Michael Rooker, Daniela Melchior, Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, Storm Reid, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi and John Cena. Unfortunately, no other details as to who will be playing which character is very much a mystery at this time.

The first installment of Suicide Squad was helmed by David Ayer. The flick turned out to be a critical flop- but was a monster at the box office. Even though a sequel was in the talks right after its release in 2016, it was never completely materialized.

However, in the turn of event that followed James Gunn’s firing from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2018, DC and Warner Bros. bagged him to direct a sequel. Though Marvel immediately hired him back on board for the final Guardians installment, Gunn decided to with the DC movie first.

Idris Elba Wants to Return as Heimdall. Will It Be In ‘Thor 4’ or ‘Loki’?

by Kaylen Summers

Idris Elba is one of those actors who joined the MCU during its early days. The actor first made his appearance as Heimdall in 2011’s Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh and went on to play the role in both Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. Elba also made a brief appearance in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and in Avengers: Infinity War- where the character met his unfortunate end in the hands of the mad titan.

Now, it seems like the actor is hoping to return back to the franchise. That’s pretty ironic coming from Elba, as the actor clearly expressed his remorse in playing the character with a wig and contact lenses for hours. He even blasted the experience in an interview from five years ago.

idris-elba-mcu-return2

However, during a recent appearance on ABC Radio that Elba was asked about his role in the MCU to this point and in the future. Though character perished in the opening scenes of Infinity War, the actor was pretty open in expressing his desire to return back to the franchise.

“Of course,” the actor said. “Listen, Heimdall is essentially part of the god family. So you know, he essentially could be alive. I’m just saying! I’m just putting it out there. The Heimdall character goes way back into, you know, the Thor mythology, And I’m sure there will be an interesting way to bring that alive. Of course, I would. Yes.”

Loki also died in Infinity War, but we will be seeing him in the upcoming series show on Disney+. So, as true fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we don’t mind seeing Thor’s best pal and keeper of the Bifrost back in action once again.

With that being said, the only thing left is to decide when and where we can expect Heimdall’s return. Of course, Loki’s upcoming show is a perfect place as the story is taking place on a different timeline formed as a consequence of the ‘time heist’ in Endgame.  However, it will be more sensible for the actor to be returning back in Waititi’s 2021 film, Thor: Love and Thunder. If that’s not working out with Fegie, there is also Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3. Who knows. Maybe we will be seeing some ‘Asgardians of the Galaxy’ after all.

What do you think? Is there any possible way for Heimdall to return back to the MCU? Or is it the last of him? Let us know in the comments below.

Henry Golding will star in upcoming GI Joe Spin off?

by Emily Keen

Buzz is that Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding will be the lead of upcoming G.I. Joe spin-off Snake Eyes.

The film will be directed by Robert Schwentke who also has Insurgent and Red to his credits.  The script has been crafted by the writer of Beauty and the Beast’s Evan Spiliotopoulos.

Snake Eyes was initially launched in Hasbro’s 1980 GI Joe’s toy line.  The live-action reboots of GI Joe featured actor and martial arts artist Ray Park in the role of this enigmatic assassin.

Paramount and Hasbro are looking to experiment with the franchise post the not so successful landing of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. In the recent writer’s gathering aimed at pitching in ideas for a new script, majority zeroed in on exalting Snake Eyes. This decision was highly driven by the character’s popularity among the viewers.

Snake Eyes is a ninja commando onboard G.I. Joe’s anti-terrorist military wing. The stealth warrior is accompanied on every mission by his pet wolf Timber. He follows a pitch-black dress code in contrast to his antagonistic counterpart Storm Shadow. And since a family spin to a story always works, Storm Shadow happens to be Snake eyes’ blood brother. The battle between the two has set a benchmark in the history of cinematic sword fights.

Now that’s one square off we all would love to savor without any distractions and limitations that occurred in G.I. Joe mainstream scripts.  There is still some confusion going around the overall storyline being a reboot or a sequel.

The last two movies of the property did not prove a major success. Even a gleaming line up of a star cast with Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum could not set the box office on fire. Explains why Paramount is desperate for a change!

Henry Golding has already worked up his charm on-screen with a successful rom-com flick that released last August. There is also a lot of hype around his upcoming holiday movie Last Christmas starring Emilia Clarke.

The ex television presenter is still in talks for the role of Snake Eyes. But we hope he lands the role since it demands someone of his charisma.
