Let’s admit it. No one honestly saw this coming. After the 2018’s Tomb Raider reboot, a sequel for it was the least anyone would expect. Yet, it’s happening and much sooner than you can imagine.
Arriving on March 19, 2021, the flick will have Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander reprising her role as Lara Croft. But, there will be some change on who is going to call the actions. Recent reports reveal that filmmaker Ben Wheatley will be helming this time around, replacing the original’s Roar Uthaug.
Wheatley is best known for directing cult British movies like Free Fire, Kill List and High-Rise. With Wheatley confirmed for directing the sequel, there is some hope that the upcoming movie will be worth watching.
Helping the director out with penning the action-adventure movie will be Amy Jump, who co-wrote Free Fire and High-Rise with Wheatley. However, we are not sure whether the movie will begin from where the last one was left.
Last year’s Tomb Raider was based on the 2013 video game and grossed over $275 million worldwide. The movie’s plot was about Vikander’s character attempting to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance.
The first installment of Tomb Raider ended with Lara overcoming the (second) death of her father and escaping the clutches of Trinity. Even if the story doesn’t pick up from there, we sure hope to see the explorer with her trademark twin pistols again on a new adventure.
Alicia Vikander has expressed her interest in playing Lara again, even before the release of the first movie. She said: “Yes, I adored taking on the role of Lara. So yeah, we’ll see. If there’s an audience out there for it, then I would love to.”
Well, from what her character when through in the first installment, let’s hope she is ready for some more bumps and bruises. Because in Hollywood sequels have to go big or go home.
‘Rambo: Last Blood’ Looks For Franchise Best Box Office Opening
by Kaylen Summers
Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo is returning for one last mission in Lionsgate and Millennium’s Rambo: Last Blood and the makers of the movie are hoping to make it a memorable one.The movie’s far projections are indicating that it could be the best debut in all of the franchise.
From what is known, the film is expected to open between $21 and $24 million over its first three days. If it is able to hit that bar following its release on September 20th, it will surpass all of the previous installments from the cult-classic franchise.
But, that’s only the best-case scenario. Even if make it to the lower end of that spectrum, it can still take the top spot amongst all Rambo films. Previously, it was Rambo: First Blood II that held the first spot, by bringing in a $20.1 million when it was released in 1985. 2008’s Rambo comes second in the list with $18.2 million, followed by 1988’s Rambo III, which brought in $13 million. The original First Blood, released intakes the last spot with $6.6 million.
At the box-office, the upcoming Rambo movie will be battling it out against the Brad Pitt astronaut film Ad Astra and Downton Abbey. However, the chances for both of these movies challenging Rambo’s supremacy over the weekend is questionable. The Brad Pitt starrer is currently pegged for a $17.5 to $19 million opening and Downton Abbey is looking to gross between $15 and $16 million. It seems like Rambo’s return is not for nothing.
Directed by Adrian Grunberg (Get the Gringo), the movie is penned by Stallone himself with Matthew Cirulnick (South Beach, Absentia). Picking up where 2008’s Rambo ended. Last Blood has Sly’s title character visiting his estranged father at his horse farm in Arizona. As he settled into a quiet life after his father’s passing, he is thrown back to action when a friend’s daughter is kidnapped by the dangerous Mexican cartel led by the cruel Hugo Martinez (Sergio Peris-Mencheta).
Rambo: Last Blood will hit theaters on September 20.
If your brain is missing a dose of high-speed action, amidst firing guns and nasty explosions, we have good news!
Michael Bay is back to helming, with an action feature titled Black 5. The story is an original idea from the man himself but no details of the plot, have been spilled yet! Reports have it that the movie is being developed as a video game too, just like most Bay movies.
Ehren Kruger (Ghost in the Shell) will be doing the screenplay. Bay and Kruger go way back, as they have worked together on the script of multiple Transformer movies. Bay and Erwin Stoff will team up again after 13 Hours to produce the new high voltage action-adventure backed by Sony.
The details of Black 5 have not been addressed by the studio for now. The production is expected to begin in early 2020 as reported by ‘Variety’.
A typical Bay movie is an assortment of pyrotechnics, flying cars and fast cuts of mad war between patriots and enemies! Oh yes! And how can we forget his signature 360 spin shot! Considering his obsession with style over substance, it is safe to expect Black 5 to be an overhaul of a high energy tussle.
Michael Bay’s Transformers property has a cult following around the world and to date remains one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. The franchise returned to screens in 2018 with its latest spinoff- Bumblebee. The film was a blockbuster and well received by critics and audience at large. It was directed by Travis Knight with Bay as a producer.
Michael Bay’s take on shooting films is improvisation to the max and giving the audience a complete visual of his set. His art lies in punctuating the scenes in a way to provide the viewers with a sense of space.
Bay’s career highlights include Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys, The Island, Pain & Gain and 13 Hours. He is currently working on a Netflix project starring Ryan Reynolds which is expected to release next year. The director is also working on a sci-fi thriller titled Robocalypse, which happens to be an adaptation of a novel by Daniel H. Wilson. The script is penned by Seth Goddard and the plot is set in the wake of a robot insurgency.
For all we know, we have a lot of Bayhem coming up on the big screen in the next two years.
New GI Joe Spinoff Movie To Feature Undercover Specialist Chuckles
by Kaylen Summers
Even the die-hard fan of the old G.I Joe lineup may not be familiar with the undercover expert: Chuckles. But don’t worry, we will be seeing the character from the comics, making a big-screen appearance in what is reported to be a spin-off from the franchise.
Paramount and Hasbro have already announced the upcoming movie Snake Eyes months ago. The new spin-off can build up to a G.I Joe Cinematic Universe sometime in the future. Reportedly, writers Josh Appelbaum and Andrew Nemec, who wrote Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, are attached to pen the script. The pair will also be writing the Tom Clancy-based thriller Rainbow Six for Paramount.
The immensely popular G.I. Joe was first adapted as a live-action movie with 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The movie grossed over $300 million at the box office and paved the way for the sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013). The movie added Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to the cast and performed even better at the box office, grossing over $375 million.
Though Paramount sought to continue the success of the franchise with a third installment called G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant, the movie didn’t even make it past pre-production. Initially reported to be released in 2016, the project juggled directors and eventually wound up in development hell.
With Snake Eyes spin-off, G.I Joe is all set to return back to the silver screen once again. Directed by Robert Schwentke (Insurgent, Allegiant), the film will follow Snake Eyes’ journey to Japan for training and his eventually joining the G.I. Joe team.
Revenge is a story as simple as its title. It’s a rape and revenge thriller, and that should tell you just about everything there is to know about the plot. Matilda Lutz plays our vengeful hero. Her name, backstory, or really any character traits apart from sheer grit and determination are irrelevant here. She’ll be hurt, she’ll survive against all odds, and one by one she’ll hunt them down. You expect the wide shots, the badass music, the brutal violence. We’ve seen it all before.
What I hadn’t seen before was not the story, but the telling of it. Writer-director-editor Coralie Fargeat has given this movie a distinctive voice, making it memorable not in its plot points, but its minutiae. I remember the bit apple, the blood dripping on the ant, the star-shaped earring. Cinematographer Robrecht Heyvaert employs extreme close-ups, making the movie’s desert setting feel all the more gritty, visceral and real. Just like The Revenant, another revenge movie, made us feel the cold, Revenge makes us feel the heat. The sounds of the desert are loud too, completing the effect of immersion. When you not only see what the protagonist sees, but also feel what she feels, you don’t need a backstory to get invested.
The editing deserves special mention. It is perhaps the biggest reason the movie is so engrossing. Now usually the kind of editing most deserving of praise is the kind that is so seamless that you forget it’s there. The editors on Revenge announce their presence with a bang, and take over the show. The sudden cuts are flashy, showy, and spectacular. If the deliberate pacing used effectively to build tension throws you off, these edits are what will keep you engaged.
From a story perspective, the one thing I did find remarkable here was the symbolism. There’s a subtly effective phoenix metaphor in the way she comes back after being left for dead. Well, at least until the movie decides to get rid of the subtlety and embrace that metaphor as its emblem. And while the movie offers no deep feminist insights, it’s certainly interesting to see how the 3 antagonists of the film embody different traits associated with toxic masculinity: entitlement, apathy and a bloated, fragile ego. To me, this made their comeuppance all the more satisfying.
Revenge isn’t some masterpiece of action, hell, it’s not even a masterpiece in the revenge subgenre. But it’s a good movie, and one I highly recommend to those who need an outlet for righteous feminist rage.
If you don’t mind copious amounts of blood, gore and full frontal male nudity that is.
Revenge is available for digital rent and download now.
