It seems like the interest in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is not going to settle down any time soon. The movie recently got released on home video and has become Lionsgate’s best home release in five years.
Ever since its release in 2014, the action franchise led by Keanu Reeves has created its own fan-base and it seems to be increasing after each new installment. The threequel, which is more critically acclaimed and packed with stunning action sequences, collected over $170 million domestically and $320 million worldwide this summer. That is nearly double of what the prior movie had made.
Recent box office reports show that David Leitch’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw will soon crawl past John Wick’s $171 million cume in the domestic box office. However, the third John Wick movie is already a buzzy hit and now has set its sights on the post-theatrical business. The movie has already broken a studio record for the most electronic sell-through titles (EST) in just one week.
Till date, the movie has sold over three million units as DVD, Blu-ray, 4K HD, EST and Video on Demand rentals. It marks Lionsgate’s biggest-selling release in the past five years, since Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I back in August of 2015. However, it is nothing compared to the acclaimed threequel that vastly overperformed in theaters and is now over-performing in-home release as well.
As the interest in the franchise is growing exponentially, Lionsgate is set to develop the John Wick brand further by capitalizing on the opportunity. They are already working on a spinoff TV show based on ‘The Continental’ and the inevitable John Wick: Chapter 4 will be hitting theaters in 2021. Reeves will reprise the role of the assassin, with Chad Stahelski back on director’s chair. In the meantime, fans can to stay to the universe through John Wick 3‘s home release.
It is obvious that the flick will outperform much bigger financial hits like Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and become one of the studio’s biggest franchises. The third installment is currently the studios’ sixth highest-grossing release of all-time and by far their biggest release of the year. With more to come from the franchise, we will be seeing more records been broken along with bones onscreen.
