There is no doubt the Todd Philips’ Joker will be a worthy contender at the Oscars this year. Grossing a weekend collection of $96 million at the domestic box office and $248 million worldwide, the movie is clearly triumphing at the theatres. Joaquin Phoenix’s power-packed portrayal of Arthur Fleck and his gradual descent into a homicidal maniac is nothing short of excellence.
However, it seems like the new Batman will be chasing down his arch-nemesis at the Oscars too. Recent reports are confirming that Robert Pattinson will be competing at the Oscars next year for his performance in ‘The Lighthouse‘. A24 has officially submitted the actor for award consideration.
Pattinson will be competing in the lead actor category while co-star Willem Dafoe’s name has been submitted for the supporting actor field. The Lighthouse made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and received immense critical acclaim. Though the movie is yet to be released in theaters, it has already established itself as one of 2019’s must-see movies.
The Lighthouse is director Robert Eggers’ homage to the classic black-and-white horror movies era. The movie takes place in the 1890s and talks about two lighthouse keepers (Pattinson and Dafoe). Their isolation and loneliness drive them into insanity.
With the movie already being referred to as a classic, all is now left to see is whether it will take the ‘clown prince of crime’ down. If given his first Oscar nomination, it will huge milestone in Pattinson’s career as he is all set to play ‘cape-crusader’ in the upcoming The Batman.
Joker, on the other hand, has already made its moves for Oscar, as the movie had a special show at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre on Saturday. However, the reactions for it were mixed. The movie was already receiving similar critical responses long before, which gave its 69% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score and a B+ on CinemaScore.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait until the nominations are officially declared to see how far this battle will go. Check out Spotflik again for future updates about this.
